Moon Walk: watercolor on Arches 300# bright white HP. 12 9/10 x 9 inches. I am really interested in professional structured critiques, but welcome other comments. I am considering entering this piece in the 2007 Nat'l Watercolor Okla. competition.

Maybe I scared everyone off by saying (professional), but after viewing the art work posted in the various forums I see a lot of professionalism. I am just after a very structured critique. This is the only way I will really learn. I need other eyes to look at it objectively, because I am too close to it. Please don't get me wrong I do enjoy a lot of accolades like everyone else, but since I am considering entering this in the National Watercolor Oklahom competion this year I really need the critiques. I have tough skin and can take what is tossed my way especially since I have asked for it. I need to submit my slides by July, so my time is short.

I am trying to increase the size of my image. I hope this works. I would really like critiques from any forum members. Many thanks in advance.

Hi... This is a little off the subject, but how did you enlarge the digital image, if 100 (mb?kb?) is the max. for uploading on this site. All my uploads are the size of your first attempt, and I would love to have something as large as you second, successful attempt. Please explain.

I am not a watercolorist, nor do I paint abstract, you may get more of a response by also posting this in the watercolor forum above ... However, I really like this, the colors are rich and composition is balanced and solid, but I cannot critique it - sorry.

The selection of works to be professionally critiqued takes place periodically. Not all works will be selected for review. Thank you!

To administrator: I understood the professional art clinic. What I misunderstood was that I thought we could also receive structured critiques by our peers. Thank you for your claification.

I am new to the forum and an intermediate painter. I enjoy your use of color, but I was always taught that a bold color should be the focal point, and you have a lot of brights. More value contrasts would help - your painting has a good selection of interesting shapes that are not overly repetitive. I seem to have more book knowledge than painting experience. It is easier to read- no one can say you're doing it wrong! I've also been told that beginners don't use enough contrasts - just a lot of middle values. Your painting would be improved with some "serious darks" for contrast. The image size you sent was perfect!

Thank you very much Joy. I agree with you about the darks. Next time I will include more darks. I did not get an email notice when you replied to my post so that is why I am late with my reply. Pat

This is late for your initial question. I'm not a watercolorist, but my reaction would be the same whatever the medium. There's a lot going on, which I find fascinating, and with beautiful colors and visual texture.
But I want to flip it so the weight which is now on the bottom, is on the top.

I like the way you have seperated the foreground and background both colourwise warm and cool and textural soft and bold.  Your use of colour is bold.  The overall composition works well and is balanced. The only criticism I would make is the use of space as breathers, sometimes you can get caught up with the details so much you forget about the whole, the flower patterns on the right could be minimalised. Overall I think it is a really interesting piece which works well close up as well as from afar.
