There has been a rebirth lately of one of my passions,3D. I have been making 3D anaglyphs now for about 6 years, I've started playing with 3D video as well. I use the RED/Blue lens technique as it is cheap, easy and effective. NASA uses the same technique in their Mars Rover imaging, to help them negotiate the surface of the planet. Here are a few to start with, you will need some RED/BLUE glasses to apprecite them. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I'm intrigued, but I don't have red/blue glasses. Where does one get these? Can they be made with any transparent red and blue film--like a folder cover? I'm not a techie, but I'd be interested in a layman's explanation on how you create these.

Yes you can use any red and blue film to make your own.
The glasses can be found on the net at various sites, one is rainbowsymphony.com
The you can get a free pair from them. They have a small hand held cardboard viewer for about 75 cents, like the ones that come in National Georaphic publications. The cardboard type you wear like glasses are about a dollar. They are cheaper the more you buy.
There are various ways of doing the anaglyphs. Most are done with cameras, but you can do them with drawn images and even 3D game programs. Here are some I did with MS Flight Simulator.

[Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket You need two images of the same subject taken from two different views. The seperation is about the distance between your eyes. The images are then imported into a graphics editing program like Photoshop, Corel, or a program dedicated to producing anaglyphs. The images are assigned R and L and each coloured, one red the other blue. The images need to be aligned as perfectly as possible and then superimposed over each other. A certain amount of seperation is introduced that looks good and viola! You have an anaglyph.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll look into it.

I'm glad you found the information helpful. I love to turn people on to 3D this way. It is so easy to do once you understand the principles and limitations a little more. Alignment is the key. If I have good photos to work with I can do a quality anaglyph in about 3 minutes. If you do get some glasses or a viewer, and want to try it,take your camera (I'll asume you have a digital) and place it on a flat and horizontal surface in front of what you are taking a picture of. Make sure nothing is moving in your subject and take a photo. Carefully slide the camera to the right about 2 or 3 inches and take another photo. Download a free program called Stereo Photo Maker. It makes doing the alignment and filtering easier. Import your two images into Stereo Photo Maker and the rest can be automated to give you an acceptable anaglyph. You will soon discover how changing the focal point as well as the seperation can be better and you will enjoy playing with that aspect as well. Any way don't want to bore you any longer with technical stuff so I'll p1ss 0ff!

You haven't bored me at all. Thanks for the explanation and tips. don't know if I'll try it right away, but it's on my list of interesting-things-to-try-someday. (It's a very long list).

Here are some 3D anaglyphs I created with a program called Chaoscope. It allows you to create fractals in a 3 dimensional environment and view them from any angle. This feature allows me to do a screen capture of the two images I need to produce the anaglyph. Wings Fractal with a twist One eyed bug from space

Nice studies. My cousin and I are working with stereo photos. He's is the photographer and I am the artist. I am curious about the program you mention for the artwork. Can you tell me more about it?
