How can you fix a tear in stretched canvas? I have a cousin

that threw me this dilemma at me. I thought I had read it somewhere,

but have no idea where I saw it. She had one before, but threw it out.

Now she'd like to salvage it if possible. Can someone help solve this mystery?

 Thank you in Advance

Hi Joyce
That's a difficult job - not one really for an amateur! Could the canvas be taken off the frame and stretcher be re-used, either with fresh canvas or some other fabric? Or could the canvas be painted on, and the tear be used in some way to actually enhance/compliment the painting? Otherwise an easy 'fix' is to glue a piece of fabric (with PVA glue) onto the back of the canvas, press the edges of the tear down hard onto it - and hope it doesn't fray - the PVA should stop this, then coat the canvas with several layers of acrylic gesso, sanding lightly between coats, hopefully this will disguise the tear, but to be honest, I think recovering the frame would be the best/easiest option.

Not mad....just drawn that way!
