I would like some advice on how to sign my paintings.  I started out using the first name most people know me by along with my last name.  My husband thought this was too intrusive.  Then I started using my initials.   My first 2 initials spell the name my husband goes by, so everyone thought he did the paintings.  Most recently I have been signing only my "nickname".  Obviously there are many people who have this same name.  What should I do?

I view it somewhat like an author's name, you can choose one but then need to stick to it. I don't know the legal ramifications for doing it this way, but I suppose you can always file for a "business" name for the name you have chosen but I don't know if that is necessary or not. If you are showing work at a good gallery perhaps the gallery owner may have some advice on the matter.
