I started at a very young age drawing from birthday cards, copying them almost  perfectly.  I only  had pencils and paper at my disposal so that was what I am most confortable with today!  I loved art class in high school, but started to see that my earlier years of copying created a narrow ability for me.  I have worked on drawing from my thoughts and memories, I set up still life situations and I just get frustrated because things didn't look perfect.  I went to college for Graphic Design because people told me I was artistic, and I thought I was more of a rigid type of artist so the graphics thing seemed right.  I was actually good at it, but bored with it too.  I lean twards the rigid work, but my mind is more on the fluid side...I am a major procratinator!!!  I don't know what I am trying to say here, but I really want to get my desire down to something concrete!  I like watercolors, because I can work tight with them and stay somewhat realistic.  I have started to use acrylics to see if I could be more abstract...why I think acrylics are for the abstract?  Anyway, I need someone to hold my hand...get me started!?

lasnyder... Welcome to my world. Early drawing. Must be perfect. Could make it perfect in due time. Mostly copied pieces from drawing books. And a few items that I could draw spot on...like a horse or a corvette (ahh, the things little girls treasure) Oh yeah, also a graphic artist.

I joined this forum to get a push. To help me create something. I have all the tools and skills...but lack the follow-thru (for whatever reason...time is certainly not an issue)

My goal is to decide upon a medium and create a piece to post. Knowing that I have a commitment may make the difference for me. I'm also going to sort through ALL my art stuff. That may help.

I think it is the perfectionist in me that has kept me from actually creating a piece. I have a suggestion for both of us. Plan on creating some type of abstract. No fine detail. Your acrylic should work well for that. Decide on your favorite shapes that you doodle. Use your favorite colors.

Good luck getting started!

Hi, I hope I can be of some help.  I also started out drawing...drawing every little detail.  Don't you find it tedious?  The wonderful thing about being really good at drawing, is that you have the perfect foundation for any kind of creative work.  Now you just have to find what moves you as an artist.  What type of art do you see that touches you and makes you want to be like that.  Look in books, in galleries, museums, at artists online, wherever...and take note of what makes you go...aahhh. I LOVE THAT.  Then start.  I guarantee you, that when you pick up that paintbrush and start, you won't look back. (Well, I guess I can't guarantee that, maybe detail is really your passion.)  I drew for years and years...afraid to paint because I might not be good enough.  My first painting is one of my best, and I haven't looked back.  I Love it.  You can accomplish so much in so little time.  Get yourself some great books, study some great artists, and paint without caring what the end result will be.

Good Luck!!

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum. When I find myself not working at my art for a while I usually find that my left brain has found another reason to remain in control. It can sneak up on me and there are many distractions out there that can be found to sabotage any creative endeavor. Good Luck.

Hi,

The best advice I can give to you is pick the medium you are most comfortable with and go for it! Really! Try to do at least one piece of art each day. You'll soon find a pattern developing, and a style too. Your style will find you as long as you keep at it. Most of all, remember that there are no wrongs and rights in the artworld, so your work will always be valid. Have self confidence in your art.

Good luck,
