I have a wonderful husband, Bob, and four wonderful dachshunds, Jeau, Linus, Teena, & Telly, and two wonderful kids in college, Ashley (22) and Nick (21)
I am a website developer and graphic artist.
As an artist, I always have a burning desire to create something wonderful. I fall asleep thinking about what I will create. BUT, my motivation runs out before I actually get anything done. Sometimes I will purchase all the materials needed for said piece...but it never gets created. I am very frustrated. I am looking for some motivation to follow through.
I LOVE light, glass, and gemstones. I want to do a piece in glass and find a way to incorporate part of my large gemstone collection (precious and semi-precious) I did take stained glass classes about ten years ago...and I now own everything that I would need to create a piece. I own a ton of materials to create beautiful pieces in other mediums, too - canvases, paint, brushes, ceramic supplies, fiber optics, wood, greenware, carving tools, etc etc etc...
I just dont understand my weakness. I am a severe perfectionist regarding my work. But, I love abstract and modern art. I dont understand why the work I create has to be "perfect" yet I can appreciate the beauty of any abstracts. sigh...
Has anyone else ever hit a wall like that? I've been looking at that wall all my life. Any words of encouragement? |

When I got married 40 years ago I gave up my art to raise a family. I had some of the picture I had draw or painted. My children always saw then around and that I didn't do anything with my talent. But raising 6 children and having a sewing business in which I did alterations and custom sewing for others was all I could do at the time. Eleven years ago my youngest sons got together and got me all the supplies I would need to get back into my art for my birthday. I was just getting back into it when I was in an accident. After two four years of constant pain and then surgery I was able to retrain myself to write and draw. And now I'm back into my drawing and painting because of a few very good friends who have been encouraging me that my art is good. I do alot of detail work in my pictures. I am now in the process of writing and illustrating a children's story book. Sometimes it just takes someone to encourage you to just go for it. Now I say to you just go for it and do it. Have fun with it. Sherry

Wow! Six kids and a business! I take my hat off to you! I have no excuses. My days are dull. I sometimes refer to myself as a dog-mom. I do thank God every day that I have such a wonderful husband, though.
In the eighties and early nineties, I painted like crazy. I did a lot of Patrick Nagel type of women...and started a series of men. But, I think I painted to impress whomever I was dating at the time...as I can usually relate most of those paintings to a particular individual.
I am fiercely private about my work until it is finished (perfectionist thing) I get a little sick to my stomach if someone is looking at an unfinished piece. And, no, I dont have OCD !
Last night, I got out my doodle pad and started making my favorite shapes...3D cones and spirals and strings of perfect pearls.
Today I am going to decide upon a piece (and medium) to create. Thanks for the encouragement! |

| You are very welcome for the encouragement. Now that all the kids are grown up and have left the house I am just a dog-mom also. But two dogs that keep me hopping. They are small but full of pep. The one is a pom/keeshound mix and goes about 20 pounds. She is mine and only tolerates the men in the house or who come over. The other is a teri-poo, 10 pounds of vinegar. She thinks she is top dog even though she is younger than the other one. She is my husband's dog.And she doesn't like anyone getting close to him and growls to let everyone know. Sherry |

My "rats", as I fondly call the dachshunds, are a great inspiration to me. I am constantly crawling around on the ground with my camera to get unique shots.
I adopted a paralyzed little fellow from HUA.org (a nationwide no kill shelter in Auburn, NE) He spent five horrible years in a puppy mill. Broke his back. And was rescued days before his death sentence arrived. The puppy mill kept him around for over six months in that condition...hoping he would get better (with no medical care) and be of use to them again. He spent two years in the shelter, as his special needs were daunting to potential "parents"
Telly (after Telly Savalis) is a bald, blue, paralyzed mini dachsie with a cart. He has a heart of gold. I keep a running blog on him and he should be the poster-dog of what puppy mills are all about. I get emails every week from all over the country from dog-lovers. Telly's reputation preceded him!
Telly's blog - http://www.elleon.com/telly.htm
My black/tan smooth, Linus, is my guard dog. He growls at anyone that even THINKS about touching me...including Bob! Jeau, my red longhair, is my heart dog...my doggie soul-mate. Teena, black/tan longhair, is an equal opportunity girl for her affections. But she rules the roost when it comes to the other dogs! |

| I would like to make a suggestion. There are a lot of frustrated artists out there who just haven't found the right medium for them. How about trying a three dimensional piece, starting with a box or a small cabinet, ala Joseph Cornell. Arrange some of the materials you have accumulated in it trying for a link without being too obvious. If it says something to you, leave it, do a painting of it, photograph it. But by leaving it as a finished work you will have your contemporary reality. |

cagg... Interesting idea. If nothing else, you have inspired me to head to my wrapping/storage/studio room where all my years of art supplies are stored and go through everything! And sort it into useable containers...rather than cardboard boxes. I do love 3D pieces...maybe some assemblage art is in my near future during my studio overhaul
I decided upon a piece to make. I have a large statue of the VIrgin Mary and I have photographed her dozens of times at various angles. I have Photoshopped the photos and done countless unique things to them. I have bought canvasses and paint to recreate her image in acrylic. No follow through on any of them. The photos sit on my computer. The photoshopped images sit on my computer. The canvas has pencil drawing on it, but sits and waits.
Mary has inspired me creatively...so I should take that inspiration and finish her! |

...I'll add to this!
When I was younger, I thought the house had to be perfect and my kids had to be perfect, I had to be perfect etc, etc.. (Well my mother in law said so!)
After many long years of chronic fatigue I learned something...nothings perfect.
Maybe making yourself a schedule where you say something to yourself like...."I do chores and errands until lunch...and that's it...then I go to my artistic space and do my joy!" Don't clean the artistic space too much either ...I heard that the writer Michael Chrighten has a cottage that he goes to each morning...and when he has dusted all the books ..he has nothing else to do... so finally has to write...I think the important this is...not to have too many other distractions in your creative space. Not all of us are lucky enough to have a cottage...I'm still hoping and praying... ...but maybe you can find a corner that's all yours and inform everyone (dogs too) of your schedule! I think some people have to work on their space, some on their 'permission' as in...you're allowed to be an artist!, and some on blocking out their time.
Hope this is some help!! |
