Just joined found and joined this group. I am interested in getting around and trying to catch up on the introducitons and posts...but alas, I'm still working a day job and trying to get my painting in at other times. I painted my first painting in oil in 1962. Although, I really didn't get serious about art until 1999, when I actually began to study under professional artists. Portraits and figurative work is my focus right now. But, I need to get back to still life and landscape work. I have listed my web site although it hasn't been updated since 2002. My most recent work in posted at http://flickr.com/photos/timsart/
Any critique is welcome. I may cry but you won't hurt my feelings.
I look forward to getting to know y'all and letting anyone interested know more about me.

Hi, Tim! Welcome. Portraits are about the toughest thing to do. I really love Wayne and Liz. They seem to show best on my screen. It looks like you captured something emotional in Wayne and it is dazzling. That's what I like to see in a portrait. I have done portraits, but do not have any on my site at this time. Can't find one, others are gone, gone, gone. But I am about to do another. Your work has spurred me onward! Thanks!

Hi Tim,
Welcome, I really like your works. Recently I am doing 21 portraits and discover something that I didn't think of it before -- the neutral colours, the subtleness like grey bring out the paintings. May be you would like to try that, good luck!

Bright,
Thanks. You look like you're into a lot of stuff. Must keep you very busy.
Liz was a portrait commission I just completed from a snapshot. It turned out pretty well. Everyone of interest seemed to be very pleased with it. It was actaully a surprise for Liz on her retirement. It will hang in her school.
Wade (not Wayne) is actaully my son. I painted that from a black and white photo taken when he was about 17. I did it last year and he's 28 now. That is my favorite painting...even if it is my son.
Thanks ever so much for the compliments.

Janey,
Thanks for the compliments. Please tell me more about the greys. I don't quite understand. I'm painting in a group with a professional artist and I'm strugling with what he has me doing. And without an art background, I struggle with a great deal of the terminology.

VW,
Thank you. The Rising Boys was done as a bartered deal for their summer place near Destin, FL. We usually get a discounted rate and they get a painting. I did that from a photo they had sitting on their dresser in their beach house. They didn't know about it until we presented it to them. They have it hanging over their mantle in their home.
The Masai children was taken from a photo of a friend that commissioned me to paint another Africa picture for her. The children was just another photo in her batch. I sold the original and the person who bought it has resold it... So, my work is being resold (one piece) and I'm not even dead yet.

Hi Tim,
I have to confess that I am a new kid on the block. But I am not afraid to share my experiences with others. I have been doing Grade 6 portraits for my kids school for four years. Lately I found that the neutral colours bring out the dark (which is depth of the picture) and the light. Harley Brown has just publiced the second book; and is good to study it. There are a lot of grey, brown, and greenish; or should I say the mid tone? Here the cover page of Harley Brown. Happy painting.

Jim,
Thanks. You also do nice work and look to be nice and busy. I haven't used acrylics since the early 90's and I have use pastels once in my life and that was in the late 60's. I keep thinking about picking the pastels up again. But, something lurking over my shoulder is the lure of sculpture...hmmm. I just might try my hand at that.

Hi Tim. Welcome. I had a peek at your work. Awesome!!! You have a gift of being able to capture people from the inside out. Pastels are a dusty subject like scuplting. Smiles. I tried my luck with soapstone once and enjoyed the challenge. Look forward to seeking more of your work and hearing your view and thoughts on art. This is a great forum. I have learned much in a short time. The folk are friendly. Johanna |

Joanna,
Thank you for the compliment. I'm not sure if I gave you my flickr.com address. I've been posting most of my current stuff there until I can figure out how to update my web page. http://flickr.com/photos/timsart/
Thanks for the compliment. I didn't see where I could see what you're doing. Or did I just miss it. I consider myself pretty much self taught...at least no formal education. I did start working with and artist in 1999 and in three years he brought me a long way. I still consider him my mentor, although he's about 6 years younger than I am. He's much more mature in the art field. I'm currently working with two artist, James/Jim Schell and March Chatov. I am lucky to be able to work with these men and have them critique my work and prod me along.
Thanks again and I look forward to more interaction here.

Gene,
Thanks...I'm still plugging away. I hope to post a portrait I just completed for a local art project. It's for the Atlanta Fine Arts League and it's there project Art From The Heart. Some of us are painting portraits of GA soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. I hope to have my soldier photographed and posted soon.
