Hi, I'm Sandy from Hartselle, Alabama.  I'm a novice artist who loves oil.  I mean a true novice artist.  I became a member to learn from other members; tips and what have you.  I have a passion in my heart to learn.  I want to paint so badly.  I just acquired a teacher.  Encouragement is most welcome.  I will let you know how I progress.  And I will post paintings as I go.  I'm a little embarrassed to post my first paintings.  My son will have to help me with the technology, as I am technologically impaired.  Anyway, it's wonderful to meet you.  I will visit your websites and be amazed at your art.  Take care...Sandy

P.S.  My son added the stars on here.  I don't know what they are for and I don't know how to get them off.  Please don't think I think I'm something special or anything.  Like I said, I'm technologically challenged - ha!

Here is a sample of one of my first paintings...

Welcome to the world of art Sandy. I think you are off to the right start by joining the forum. You seem to have the right thinking to get yourself up and running. You will find that the more you learn the less you will know. As long as you have the will to draw you will succeed.
I had a peak at your painting and you have done quite well for the first time. Keep putting one foot in front of he other and you will be fine.
Some of my tips would be. To doodle as much as you can about anything that comes to mind. Let your mind run free. Art is about seeing and learning the tricks of the trade.
Look for tones instead of color, Paint with your arm instead of your wrist. The rest you will learn along the way. There are plenty of great people here that will help along the way. What would life be without learning?
What kind of medium to you like to work with?
A pleasure to meet you Sandy.

Dear Johanna,

Thank you so much for the welcome and the encouragement.  Thank you for your kind word about my painting.  Thank you so much for the advice too!  I will put it to use.  I like to work with oil.  What kind of medium do you like to work with?

It's an honor and a pleasure to meet you, Johanna.  Thank you again for writing.

Hi Sandy,
I too took a peak at your painting and I agree with Johanna that you are on the right track. The desire to create is definitely there. Please keep the work coming.

I like to work with graphite pencil. I also like arylics. They work best for me. I am dabbling in primacolor and I just purchased some pastels. I am really a novice just like you. I just keep working at it. The main thing is to enjoy what it is you are doing. I have always been creative in one way or another. At first I seem to need photos to work with. They were like a security blanket. Now i am finding that photos seem kind of flat to look at. There is no body to them. They are a good guide and help a great deal. I keep an open mind and will try most any medium once. How you feel when you are doing art has an effect on how it turns out.
Happy painting.

Hi Sandy,
Welcome to Artist's Network.
There are many people here who are willing to offer help and encouragement.
I don't work in oils but I did look at your painting. I think you are off to a good start. One thing I would recommend is that you sketch out your subject before you start painting. It appears that you ran out of room at the bottom and had to squeeze in the bottom of your vase. Also, more variation of color in the background would add to the interest of the painting. The shading on the vase is nice. The light source appears to be coming from the left, so some darker shading in the fern on the right side would be nice.
I hope these suggestions will be of some help to you.
Hang on to that passion and you will be successful!

HI Sandy......

Welcome to the site! There are a lot of talented people around here that really know their stuff....so if you're looking for a place to learn.....you've found a great place. I've been here for 2 months now and learned a lot from the work and comments of these talented artists. Always keep in mind that when people give you a critque, it's meant to help make you a stronger artist, not to discourage you. Don't be afraid to post your work. I checked out your vase. I agree with Ron....the shading on your vase is nice. However the proportions are really off. Practice drawing any bottles or jars you can find in your house. Solid drawings will make your paintings much stronger. (I can't TELL you how many bottles I've agonized over in art classes.) Good to have you here and I look forward to seeing you grow as an artist.

Hi Jess,

Thank you for the encouragement.  I do take the critiques as opportunities for growth and ways to practice.  Thank you for your advice.  I will practice drawing.  I bought this book called Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain.  I hope it is going to help my art.  Thank you so much for taking the time to write me and comment on my painting.  It is wonderful to meet you.

Hi Sandy,
I see that you bought the Betty Edwards book. Another book that I would recommend is ‘The Natural Way to Draw’ by Kimon Nicolaides published by Houghton Mifflin co. It is in paperback. It is a book of simple scheduled exercises that build one upon the other and that could take a year to complete. I wish you the best.
