Hi everyone...I've just joined this community!!!! I'm a former high school art teacher and wish to become a professional artist in every way. I'm currently working on pastels and acrylic. My problem: focus, and not being "driven" to work on my art as much as I "need" to. The "focus" part is a problem because there is so much I'm interested in, I feel I need tunnel vision at times. I've experimented with polymer clays in the making of jewelry, painting floorcloths, and fabric embelishment with paint and embroidery. I've done oil and watercolor paintings. I've exhibited in many local and regional shows. Having been an art major in college and subsequently teaching it on the high school level, I've had to master many of the disciplines, and really love so many of them. Sooo, what do you think of my rediculous situation?

You have come to the right place Suart. You will find this place educational, inspirational, warm, freindly, and enough to ruffle your feathers for keep you focused.
Art is a state of mind, or to me it is anyway. I find I can't be artistic if I have the world and everything else to sort through first. Music helps..
I see that you are diverse in your artistic ablity. That could be good and bad I find because I find when I get to many progects on the go, it is hard to keep up.
I plan also someday paint a floor cloth. I have painted floors though.
I think you will find this place as interesting and inspiring as I do. It is filled with a wealth of information and many freindly folks.
Will be looking forward to seeing some of your works.

Hello to all, I have just discovered this form.
I guess I would be classed as a new artist. I have been painting "fine art" for 2 years now.
I first pcked up a paint brush 3 years ago, that was to try "the one stroke method" decorative painting.
I do not knock this type of art at all, and the reason is that by doing decorative painting on bottles and glasses it has paid for "fine art classes", and it still pays for supplies.

I do really prefer to do work on canvas or board, but you do what pays the bills.

Anyway, I fig it was time to talk to the experts and get feedback on my art. I was in a show in September (my first). It was VERY exciting, especially since I sold a painting!!

I go into my next show in May, I hope I do as well.

I am into both Oil and Acrylic painting, I have also dabbled in pastel. So far I emjoy it all.

When I figure out how to post a photo of my paintings I will. In the meantime if you would like to see some of my work please go to www.yessy.com and in the search box type in Denise Patrick. That will take you to my gallery.
Hope to hear from you all soon. Regards Denise

Welcome to both of you. Denise, I went to www.yessy.com. When I got that page, I typed in DenisePatrick in the Search box and came up with a page that said it couldn't be found. I tried it several times to no avail. What did I do wrong? Suart, in regard to your love of so many things artistic, I can fully relate to you. I've tried so many things in my lifetime, as well. Lately, I've really settled down into painting with pastels and on occasion watercolors. I just purchased a few water-based oils and want to try that, but I've done baskets, knitting, sewing, decorative painting, making fabric bowls, etc. etc. etc. I think it's kind of the nature of the beast! Am anxious to see work from both of you.......... Gene

Hello Gene, I think the problem you are having is there is no space between my first and last name. Try that and let me know the result. Denise Patrick

Sounds sooo familiar, so now I'm thankful to hear that you also want to do everything. I'm terrible, here's an extreme case. I went from thinking I would do a BA degree in fine art ....what do I see BA  Degree in jewellery instead. Now I want to go back ( when children are older) to do a MA in Fine Art, or so I think right now! then I became involved in fine enamelling, now illustration. Not to mention I want to learn stain glass, bronze sculpting, digital ,mosaic....

My website right now is just snapshots of what I can fit in right now between 4 kids 8, 6, 4, & 2.www.sarahmadsen.com So I'm really on hold and instead addicted to magazine such as the artist magazines. Of  course there are soo many to magazines & books.. ( oh! metal clay I'm toying with next.) I think cloning me is the only answer. I think this more when I 'm just juggling being  mom.

Welcome,
I too am a former public school art teacher. We are jacks of all materials, because we have to be in the classroom, as well as, mothers, counselors, policeman,ect... I left teaching this past year to try to become an real artist,(health reasons too).
What ever that is, I always feel really stranger calling my self an artist. I think people have this image in their heads of Van Gogh or someone like that, which I could not even begin to be. I just want to create. I am now trying to narrow my mediuims down to 2 or 3, mainly because I can not afford to buy all the materials I would like to have, that will force me to get better a maybe 1 of them. Shana Cochran
