I'm new to this site.  Been painting in oils for about 4 years now and love it; I've taken some art classes, but most of my knowledge has been gathered through self-teaching via books, magazine articles, and videos of other artists whose work I admire.  I've found Northlight Book Club to be a valuable resource for purchasing books/videos.  Also for purchasing art supplies, I frequent the catalogs or web-sites of Jerry's ArtaramaArt Supply Warehouse (ASW), MisterArt, and Dick Blick.  These happen to be some of my favorite places for purchasing art supplies, as the discounted prices are much better and you can save as much as 50% over retail costs.  I recently went to purchase a tube of cadmium yellow (Windsor & Newton) at Michaels which costs $29.00.  The same tube of paint costs me $15.00 when I ordered it.  Anyone not familiar with these sites should check them out.  You'll save yourself a lot of money!

Hi OrangeSwirl, Janey and any other artist who wishes to save money.

I'm a new (Formal) Art Student, although I've been sketching and doodling since I was about 5 years old. If you really want to save money on books get the Name and ISBN number from one of the Art sights , then go get them on Amazon. I've been purchasing pristine book for about a 75 -85% discount. I wanted to get a particular book on watercolor textures which sold for $29.95 at a regular art book supplier. I found it on Amazon for $6.50 plus shipping. Beware sometime the shipping will cost more than the book, but the savings are well worth it.

Goodluck and Happy Shopping

Hi Orangeswirl-

I did a little bit of price shopping and came up with the following:

A copy of  [The Artists Handbook] at each of the following online stores was. . .

Jerry's Artarama........$39.99

CheapJoes................$22.49

ASW..............(was not available)

DickBlick...................$19.99

Mr. Art......................$20.41 and VIP Price $18.14

Amazon......................$13.45

If you do a bit of surfing you'll get really great prices.  So far Amazon has not failed me, I buy the used books and shop for the best prices there.  Happy shopping.

And have a great Thanksgiving

Vilma
