For a local charity, I paint a one-sided, blank, wooden, fish-shaped plank with acrylics. This side is primed first. The picture usually is a simple painting (sails, cats, suns, musical scales, anything with a pun for fish). The fish are about 1 1/2 long. Since I have a limited amount of real varnish for my personal use, I want to find an inexpensive alternative to covering the acrylics. I know that in the craft world, a diluted solution of Elmer's glue can be used to seal paper to wood (decoupage). It dries pretty clear. If these fish are used as indoor decorations, can this be done? The charity charges a small price for these works, so I don't worry about "archival" longevity. CM

I'd be a little worried about the watered down glue blurring or smudging the paint... have you tried testing it out on a practice piece first?
