I sell prints of my work from my website from time to time, and have just had a couple of emails from people saying that they are interested in buying something they have seen on it – but there is something suspicious about the emails that makes them seem like a scam.
They both say they are looking for a piece of work to give to someone for their wedding anniversary – and they’re almost throwing their money at me. I would only accept money by Paypal, so don’t know quite how I would end up out of pocket, but there’s something about the way they are written that suggests I certainly would be.
Has anyone else had this experience? Has this been discussed before?

| I've had some suspicious emails as well. I right click on properties, details, however you can find the source, and a spam/scan source may show. Sometimes googling the source or emailer will show up as a scam. Otherwise ask for confirmation, don't send the print until the money is in Paypal, and be wary of issuing a "money back" guarantee. If anyone else has a method, feel free to add it or correct me. |

We've actually got an article on these kinds of scams in the March issue of The Artist's Magazine (on page 68). One big piece of advice is to never accept a check for more than the amount of the sale. And if you use PayPal, conduct your business directly on the official website—never click on links in your e-mail if you're not absolutely sure it came from PayPal.
Here are some good online resources to protect yourself against scams: http://lookstoogoodtobetrue.com/fraud.aspx http://www.ic3.gov http://fakecheck.org/ |

Thanks. This kind of scam email seems to have been getting more common lately in the experience of artists I know. Another website offering advice is http://www.artscams.com/

| I get these scams all the time. I have my paintings on a few websites and they just randomly pick someone to try to scam. You can usually tell by the language. You would think if they wanted to be succesful at a scam, they would learn to speak your language.I also get a lot of lottery scams and scams telling me I have inherited a lot of money, again the language is terrible. |
