12/13/2007 4:34 PM Alert

I just submitted a drawing on the all media paint off and am frustrated.  I don't know what I am doing to lose so much detail and distort the art work.  And it's not the only one I've had bad luck with...Rick's kids in the oil catagory (Among others) came out wrong too.

When I scan I set the scanner at 300dpi's and then at photoshop 7 I set the image size to what I think will be big enough to veiw correctly..."Bringing out color" #1 was set at 9x12 and saved at 94.41 dpi's....#2 was cropped and set at 8x10 and saved at 87.91 dpi's.

And looks like your looking thru a fish tank....yuck!

Can someone please, tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Rosie

Hi, Rosie!

Generally, you want to keep the resolution high and just decrease the dimensions when you're trying to make an image smaller for Web use. For example, you might decrease the size of the image to 3x4, but since it's at 300 dpi, the quality will be better and the overall size of the file will be smaller. I'd be curious to see how that compares to the ones you posted in the Paint-Off (which weren't terrible by any means!).

I'm new to this posting but I'm wondering if because this piece is horozontal you have an issue as you say. Are the dimentions your picking in photoshop horizontal too?

Rosie,

I hope it's okay with you, but I tweaked your image a bit in Photoshop to adjust levels and contrast. Is this any closer to what your original looks like?

I don't think the scanning resolution is your problem. Your scanner is probably having a tough time with getting colors and contrast right because of the colored background and lack of true whites. More expensive scanners have adjustments that you can make after a pre-scan to help get the settings right. If yours provides controls like that, you might want to check your manual and read up on how to use them. Otherwise, your left with trying to tweak a less-than-desirable image in Photoshop.

I like the piece so I hope you'll keep posting.

Rick,
I won't lie. It was a bit of a shock when I seen my arkwork up when I veiwed your comment, but you are very close to the original work....You see my problem is not in scanning , it scans great to photoshop, it's taking it from photoshop to the forum where I get distorted. Thank-you very much for taking the time and interest, the detail is crisper, I can almost see the cartoon dog on the coloring book in the for ground. You did a great job. Thanks again..........Rosie
