When you hesitate to open them when birthday cards come in the mail and when you delete "pass-it-on" emails with attachments before you even open them . . .

. . because  your friends and family continually send you birthday cards with someone else's beautiful art on them and email attachments of absolutely fabulous art work that someone else has done.  They mean to acknowledge that you are their favorite (best) artist, and share their new 'finds', but that fabulous art leaves you discouraged because you could never do it yourself.

Don't be discouraged - we are all good at different things and just cos your work is not on the cards it doesn't matter - just be inspired by what you see. (it is kinda cool your friends and family are recognising your talent and this is their way of encouraging you!) Art is a life long process and I have weeks on end of not doing anything but then something just sparks that "AHHH I can do that" feeling again and off I go again. I liken it to riding a bike, you never truly forget it but just need practise to get back up to speed!

...when your apple that you're eating in the studio tastes quite like vermillian red. And, I'm talking TASTES like here, cause you've gotten the paint all over the apple!

...when you explain to the officer that the car involved in the hit and run accident was more of an ochre color and he looks at you like your witness account will not be creadible.

...when you realize that 'blue hair' is not just for the elderly. it actually is in every color of hair out there!

...when your eBay 'won items' list is primarily composed of artist materials.

...when you drive frantically to the art supply store on a Sunday afternoon so that you can make the sale because it ends that day....only to realize that it started that day, not ended! Have you ever had that 'gonna miss an art supply sale' panic? It's kinda like a dog not knowing if it will ever eat again. You kinda think you'll see the stuff on sale again, but jussssst to be sure, you had better get all that you can NOW!

...when at your Father's funeral, you are recognized as the son that painted that 'fantastic' painting of him........and your other paintings that were given to him over the years are asked for by relatives.

you know you're an artist when...
...you can recognize other true artists.
...you can respect those artists and their work.

..... you get a jab of pain deep down inside as you watch your fancy sister in-laws carelessly and roughly wash their delicate makeup brushes

..... you find yourself talking about the most amazing colors and contrasts in the local scenery and no one around has a clue what your talking about

..... you find yourself buying pastels, oils and watercolor paints just because they are on sale and you got them for a good price. Despite the fact that you paint in acrylic

when after running out of room on your own walls for your art, you start painting gifts for family and friends, and then out of sheer desperation decide it's time to try to sell some, but when it come's down to it you aren't sure you're ready to part with them ... (well maybe, but the buyer had better love it at least as much as I do)

...you use your paintings and drawings as decorations for your graduation party.
...you make your own invitations for the party just 'cause you want to show your friends and relatives what you can do.

When you sit in the restroom stall to sketch the dragon you see in the pattern in the floor tile...

When you have to pull over on steep mountain pass to sketch / photograph the view of the mountains that you want to paint when you get home...

when you take a pen or pencil to scribble a line on a waste paper, then signed it.
when you put something on the wall and show it to anyone, usually yourself first.

you have to do some work often or you get withdrawal pains. It's like an addiction. Especially when you see other beautiful works by other artists that inspire you and you have to create something of your own or you'll just burst...

When you buy beeswax and pigment instead of dinner, and get so involved in the piece that you don't notice the dinner you didn't buy!

It's all about the image...

...when a trip to the art supply store lifts your spirits on a really bad day.

...when you order art supplies online. Only needed 1 or 2 items - but the other 45 items you just had to get!

...when you say "how would I paint that" when you look around everywhere, at everything, everyday.

...when you paint everyone paintings for Christmas.
...when you give everyone their own Christmas cards because you want to paint and draw more of them.(even though your sisters really don't even want a card because you see them everyday and they still have the cards from the last five, or so, years)

when you're 6 week old ends up with paint splattered across her face and arms from hanging out in your at-home studio while you were working.... (thank the gods i paint in acrylic)

when your significant other begins to get jealous of your muses (even if they are just in your head)...

when you can see the blues in the grass and the greens in the sky...

when you argue with your significant other about how you spent all day working (even though you were at home) and that's why nothing got done around the house...

it infuriates you when someone refers to you as a "stay at home parent" or "homemaker" or "unemployed" - you are an ARTIST - and YES, that is a REAL job...

you know the true meanings of "times of feast, and times of famine"...

you've made your own mediums before...
