When you can make a loaf of french bread, some cheese and a sodee pop last all week long so you can spend the rest of your money on art supplies.
When you realize you're children's 3 minute painting is better than the one you've spent two weeks on.
When you push the kids out of the way because you've just discovered a fantastic new medium called play dough.

...when you seriously consider making sticks out of your pastel dust.
...when you buy the wine for the shape of it's bottle, not what's in it.
...when you shovel the snow in a pattern, leaving a form that reminds you of something or someoene.
...when you slam on the brakes while driving down a lonely country road cause you've seen an owl in the trees. Never mind that your passenger is still looking for it, even after you've snapped six photos and you're leaving...it's gotta be all of the shapes that we are constantly aware of, that makes us see 'things'.

Mike,
You're having a lot of fun with this aren't you? I love reading your quips.

Thanks, Michele! I am having fun with this...Thanks to Pablo also for creating it!

-your cat has to pat you on the leg to remember to feed him -you see everyday life as a portrait to paint, photograph, draw, embellish -when a song inspires you to draw, paint, etc. -when a saying inspires you to draw it, paint it, illustrate it, etc. -when you look at your work and ask "is it good enough"

...when you drive 20 miles into town, in a blinding snow storm and 14 below zero temp (wind chill -30) to the local art supply store cause you heard there was a sale.
...when you brave those same low temps to fill the bird feeders so that you can photograph the birds for future pieces (also cause you don't want them to go hungry!!!).
...when you notice that the snow covered branches in the woods are so remarkably placed...they aren't spaced evenly, yet they look perfect. Perspective, depth and values so well done. An artist bigger and better than all. Inspiring indeed...

You know your an artist when... -you doodle all over your paper instead of doing the math your supposed to be doing. -you do the math your supposed to do and then add on to the numbers to make little people. -you start drawing what you feel and not what you see. |

- you can't remember the last time you put in a full day of work, without pulling up your artwork on the computer and spending hours on it.
- your husband keeps waking up and wondering where you are, only to find you again - in your art room painting.
- You forever keep bugging all your friends and co-workers and showing them the last or next painting you are working on!

Your fingers ache from holding your pencils, so much so that you have to drink your meals through a straw. Your brush handles are taped together because you have bitten through them, while holding them in your teeth, as you were painting that emotional piece. Your eyes suffer from the strain of the day, painting and drawing, searching the piece constantly for errors. Your bones ache from the cold that haunts your workspace, and the only comfort you have is the layers of clothing that hamper your brush strokes. Your dreams are filled with future works and the nitemares consume them in a firey ball of failure. Instead of music in your workplace, your only sound is that of your father's laugh, constantly ringing in your head. The laugh of failure and condemnation, when you told him your love was art.

You're told your whole life you are nothing but a dreamer... (tis ok by me!)
You spend $400 dollars at the art supply store & feel good about it! But you still have the same wardrobe from 10 yrs ago & haven't added anything new...and almost everything has paint on it! AND you don't care. |

...when after looking at all of the great art, in so many different mediums posted on this forum, that it makes you want to try them all.
...when you find out that you have so many things in common with other artists... it kinda validates your craft.

*you'd rather spend two hours in an art supply shop than 2 hours in a restaurant
*you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a new work
*you forget to eat lunch or dinner because you were busy
* the only books you buy are art books.
*but most of all... someone buys your work!!!! |

...you spend all day painting the most beautiful clouds, only to get carried away and paint a tree over them. ...you end up not caring about those clouds because you made even better ones in the next painting. ...when no matter what you do, you end up getting paint on your hands(and face, and arms, etc.) |

Recently I volunteered to teach a third grade art class how to draw a cat...... I brought in a reference and "puzzle peices" to assist their creativity and then decided that I should show them how easy it is to draw a cat using geometrics.... I drew a little looser (had to add that to save my ego) and quicker- just enough to get the idea across and then let them go to do their own. Well, needless to say while walking around them room to see how things were going one little boy was staring at his desk mate's drawing and looked up at me and said "Bobby is the best artist in class and you can do almost as good, you must be an artist, too" well, there you have it. I guess I'm safe now but boy I'd better be on the lookout when Bobby hits fourth grade. Live creatively, Smurfette www.suzetteeast.com |

everything you read on this page is what you think and my favorite is when you are walking home from work there is six inches of snow on the ground, the temp is around 18 degrees, a bit of a breeze is freezing the tip of your nose yet you will stand silently contemplating how you can capture the glow of the street light on the snow with your paint and canvas and not notice that your feet are numb from the cold. |
