OK, finish this statement! have fun with it!
You know you're an artist when:
You notice everything in terms of tube colors: That's a beautiful Quinacradone Gold Hillside! |

| Driving down the road you don't see just plain green grass and brown dirt. You see how the endless colors of grass glimmer in the sunlight and move with the wind. And the dirt is not flat, it has movement and shapes along with numerous colors. |

you notice that uncle Joe's nose tilts to the left and that he has a high forehead...not to mention his ears drop lower than usual!
the color of Sissy's hair is more ochre than blonde...
although Peter says that he shirt is brown, you think it's more of a burnt sienna.
you notice that the wife is frosting Bobbie's birthday cake with your favorite (I 'thought I lost that?') pallet knife!
when you see that the kids have gotten into your pastels and used them for sidewalk chalk...but, they did a great mural so you don't mind as much!
while changing the baby's diaper you suddenly think of Jackson Pollock...
you suddenly catch yourself using your 'hand veiwfinder' while looking at just about everything (quite embarrising if you get caught! ).
aaaaannnnd, when you try to explain to your significant other about how you were really just looking at the way the light was framing that woman's/man's figure you were caught staring at!!!!
the color of your wife's eyes turn a beautiful darker shade of blue when she is crying.... (NO, I don't make her cry to see this!)
the shadow you are casting is a bit rounder than it used to be a few years ago.

| When you meet someone and wonder what they would look like as a drawing/painting. . . . when you see a color and wonder what colors you would mix to get it. . . . when you see normal objects and wonder if there in perspective? . . . when your making a shopping list and you remember that you need art supplies . . . everytime! These are a few things I think about as an artist. |

...when you name your dog/cat after an art form/technique or famous artist.
...when your change jar is labeled 'brush fund'.
...when you notice that while out to dinner with friends, you have missed the thalo green on your ear from that itch you had this morning....the prussian blue on your elbow...the cadnium red on your wrist........
...when you save the the tuna cans, the yogurt containers, the jelly jars and any other cans or jars that you 'might' need for paint mixing.
....when you're not concerned about the box of silver or clothing that doesn't seem to have made it through the move. It's that box of mat corners and your pastel bits that you're worried about! |

Thanks, Gene! Hope your Christmas was full of family, peace and all the good things of the season!!! Mike
p.s. a few more... ...when you save all the Christmas wrappings for that collage that you've been planning to do...and the 'special shaped' empty bottles for the still life that you've also planned...
...when you have to explain to the young ones that your gift is not a cane, it is a mahl stick...
...when the tie you get from your niece has brushes and pallets on it...the socks you get from your nephew have a pattern of paint globs on them...and the coffee mug you recieved from your brother is labled with the phrase "Artists do it with smoother strokes"...

Nearly EVERYTHING you view, there's a voice somewhere in the back of your mind asking if that would be best rendered in a drawing or painting?
Hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!

Can't forget this one...I know I am an artist when I am counting my change, and looking for the 40% art store coupon, rather than heading to the Salvation Army on half off Wednesdays to replace my holely wardrobe...lol!
Or, when I find myself at the local craft store, and after two hours I'm still in the art aisle arguing with myself about which art supplies I need the most, and wishing I could purchase them all...One of these days they are going to kick me out, probably when they notice I spend half that time reading the "how to" books, for now I think they pity me because they realize that I'm just another starving artist! |

| and how the light feels and the color and tempature of that light, if its hasrsh or soft. i could go on forever. Sometimes its not the subjecr, but how the light is on it. But then other times, for me, its the space I see and feel across the openess where I am horseback, and I can see forever. The cloud shadows, the everything. sorry, I get so carried away! |

...when the snow is not a burden, but a fresh blanket, that shows new shapes in the landscape.
...when the empty cornfields are now fairways to the forest's edge, that become backdrops for the deer and abandoned farm equipment that stand alone in them.
...when the black spots on the dairy cows are now just negative space in a blinding snowstorm .
...when grey winter skies are not dull and dreary, but illuminating to the golds and reds of the foliage that stand within the blue and purple shadows of the fresh fallen snow.
...when asked "why don't you tear down that old building on your propertie's edge?" and you reply "because it has character and it will be saved for my future paintings."
...when you discover that the 10s of window panes that are stored in that same building, suddenly have a use after visiting a friend's glass studio.
...when you make sure that there is a soft chair in your studio,. Not to nap in, but to sit and study, think and dwell. on that piece that just won't let you stop.....and a few items to make for a comfortable night's stay, just in case you end up staying the night! |

You know you are an artist when you filter everything in life through your artist's lenses. You don't see a nose - you see a triangle with two circles inside it.
Draw. Paint. Weld. Sew. Be creative!

- when you go to a craft/art fair and everything stimulates the same response in your head ("I can do that...and I cant wait to get home and try it!")
- when the phrase "atmospheric perspective" comes out of your mouth in the real world
- at the art supply store...you buy a paint color that you already have...because:
----You might not have enough of it
----You might no be able to find it
----It might be drying up
----If any of the above 3 were to happen, you would have to make a trip back to the store, so you might as well buy it now. |
