I was very dismayed to receive a painting back from a national juried show only to find that the pastel had smeared all over, and also covered the back side of the plexiglas.  I understand that plexiglas is lighter weight, and won't break in transit, but, as a pastel artist, I am willing to take my chances with glass, as I refuse use fixatives.

I have heard through the grapevine that in framing, pastel artists are placing the glass directly on top of the painting, thus eliminating the flaking and smearing problem that all pastel artists face.  Anybody had any luck with that?  What are the negatives for this method?
