Hi all,

I am an older painter resuming painting watercolors and doing pencil drawings. I just recently became an Austin resident [still unpacking]  I am going to purchase a new printer, scanner, copier.HP preferred brand and am wondering if any other artists have experience or advice as to which model might perform scanning and making copies of sketches and small watercolors  or photos of those.  Some models have capabilities of printing on different weights and types of paper I understand. I just looked up a HP 6280 online and it would seem to be good for personal use. Most of my artwork goes to family and friends now so don't need a high end professional machine. Sincere thanks for any input,  ritan

Look in the Oct 07 issuse of Watercolor Magic good article with names of some scanners and printers.

If you want an all in one I would take samples of papers you would use and artwork and ask to see actual work. I have an hp C6180 and I don't think that it scans art very will.

Good Luck

Jerry

HI - I have a Mikrotek Scanner ScanMaker V6 UPL - that scans small artwork nicely. I received it as a gift, but think it sold for about $150 about 2 or 3 years again. In order to get good results, you have to manipulate the color with the built-in adjustment buttons. I scan - transfer the image to "My Documents" and print with prnter with photo capabillities. Good luck

Hi. Your best printers for reproducing artwork of watercolors and drawings are the Epsons. I use an Epson C88 for my greeting cards and such. The ink is lightfast where HP inks are not and their inks are more expensive. With Epson inks if you run out of one color you can replace that one color. With HP ink if it runs too low for your printer to print you will have to buy a whole new tricolor- no matter how much ink in the other wells you have. I quit using HP printers for this a LONG time ago. For scanning I use an Canonscan LIDE 30. With the Canon Scanner and my Epson printer I have had good results. Another problem with the HP printers is that they will hang up about every 10th printing. They are very time consumptive.

Epson Stylus printers which use the DuraBrite inks are great. Epson makes larger printers specifically for art reporduction, so their regular sized ones also do a wonderful job.

Mine, the CX6600, is not the newest model, but puts out great colour. It is also a flat bed scanner and copier which is very helpful.

Price of these (not the larger ones) is very reasonable. The inks don't fade. This is very important, you can let the prints sit in the sun and they will not fade (left some in the back window of my car for about 4 days [on purpose].. no problem).

i have an ancient epson777....ya i know but hey it does just fine for me...i have printed on photo paper and come up with a pretty decent mage..i have even printed out buisness cards in a pinch..and i am sure i could print out card stock too...my ink cartridges arent that bad to buy, i buy double packs on sale....but..
some of the newer larger and improved versions? check your ink prices..it might break the bank to replace em! i know a few artists who have bitten the bullet and bought epsons that were loaded with all the bells and whistles and huge beds to print large sizes..and they are happy  with them..
