Boy oh boy, did we get some emails about the cover test sent out yesterday. A lot of folks liked painting A for its color and composition, but hated the ciggy. Other people thought the woman in painting B looked like a man in drag. Did anyone on the forum see these covers? I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts.

Hi, I received the cover test email and responded. My preference was for painting A because I really liked the shadows and tones on her face and neck. But I didn't find either of the paintings to be offensive in any way, including the cigarette. It's funny how people see things so differently, but I guess that's what makes us appreciate art, in all of its differences. Darlene

Woman A, definitely. Watch some old Looney Toons. They had smoking in them and nobody gave two craps. *sigh* Children's cartoons are becoming so over-sanitized.
And in all fairness. Woman B really does look like a drag queen. |

I like (A) because it exudes emotion. The look in the eyes speaks volumes. Hey, a picture really can be worth a thousand words.

Not really fond of either one for the above mentioned reasons....but if I had to choose one....I guess it would be A. Although it might look better if it at least had some realistic smoke coming out of the cigarrette. Just looks strange.

I didn't really like either, but I picked B because I felt A looked flat across the eyes and bridge of the nose, B's face at least had some definition (even if she does look like she is in drag). Personally wouldn't make either of them a cover. Sorry!

I liked both covers, I think they are well rendered and very professionally done. I like A because she appears more earthy, sensual and definitelt not like the anorexic looking clothes models walking the runways today. I don't think that Blooks like a drag queen at all, but she does look a little bored. Both are good covers.

Hi Lisa, I found neither cover very appealing and both ladies appeared bored to me. I looked at the articles on the covers with tongue in cheek to see if there was a feature article on how not to paint commissioned portraits, but then it would still be hard to choose. I then noticed that the word ‘Fine’ was left out of the article (Illustration as (Fine) Art), in magazine ‘B.’ That argument, if that’s what the article is about, seems so spurious to me that I would not even want to pick up the magazine. As a result if I had to choose I would pick up magazine ‘A’ first.

Hi. I couldn't click on the cover I wished to vote for because the target cover hyperlink must be not working. I would vote for B because it is classy. The woman, however, does not look like a person in drag but is a realistic painting of a woman. Cover A I would pass over because the image looks cheap because of the "ciggy" and facial expression that is depicted. I think it would not be representing the Artist's Magazine well at all.

I don't think either one is very appealing. I wouldn't buy either one for the cover. If B looks like a drag queen, I'd say A looks pretty butch too. Neither one is feminine or appealing.

I think "B" is fine (I don't see the drag queen either). But cover "A" is more powerful and interesting to me. It would entice me to find the corresponding article to explore more. I vote for "A". (Just an idea - what if you zoomed out on the painting, assuming that there's more that we're not seeing?)

I think I did vote, but can't remember which one I chose... Neither really appeals to me.. They're both done well, but you know how some art just grabs you and you want it for your own... Not these for me. However, if I had to choose one of them, I'd choose A for the colors, I guess.

| I would say cover A, for it's use of color alone. It seems to catch my eye more in comparison to cover B, & the cigarette doesn't bother me at all, if anything it adds a nice small discordant note of color contrast to the rest of the composition.-Alfredo Gomez Jr.........

I am really surprised at the comments I am reading, I guess things haven't changed as much as I thought. I thought artists were the "liberal" type of person who were more open to different ideas, but maybe not. What are people looking at? the question was which cover is better... not a commentary on her smoking or her look???? Are we to only paint things that are "pleasing" to the eye??? This artist chooses to paint subjects that are not beautiful by general standards, so what... While we are at it, lets exclude every painting that has a gun, or alcohol, or has violence, or shows anyone who is physically challenged, ..... lets only show this painting if the artist covers up her breasts, while we're at it make her nose thinner, and she should be thinner while we're at it.... Guys, Guys..... There is nothing wrong with these paintings..... very realistic paintings of our non perfect world... get a grip! I choose either one! Congrats to the featured artist!
