I recently saw an image of the pastel painting The Shepherdess (1870-1874) by Jean Francois Millet. It’s beautiful and, in my opinion, a definite contender for The Pastel Journal’s list of The Greatest Pastel Paintings of All Time. Of course, there’s also the gorgeous Mother and Child (1897) by Mary Cassatt, the many exquisite bathers and dancers by Degas, and the spectacular landscapes of contemporary artist Wolf Kahn. What’s YOUR favorite pastel painting of all time? And why?

| I also love Edouard Manet's Portrait of Irma Brunner and Eugene Boudin's Setting Sun. Manet's figure has such a sculptural, statuesque quality, while Boudin's skyscape posesses explosive expression. |

I once saw the most gorgeous pastel by William Merritt Chase in a museum in Chicago. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of the piece (it was a domestic scene of someone's family), nor the museum. I do remember it left me with my jaw hanging down, it was so amazing. I spent so long in front of it, I think the museum guard was starting to get nervous.
If I can find it online, I'll post a link to it. |

| I've got to put in a vote for Whistler. The story is fascinating, and so is the art. Broke after a disastrous court case, he went to Venice in 1879 with a brief to stay for three months and produce a set of 12 etchings. He stayed for 14 months, producing more than 50 prints and about 100 pastel paintings with an incredibly light touch. Hard to pick an absolute favourite from so many, but for now I'll put my mark down for Campanile Santa Margherita. |

I don't know if it's the greatet pastel of all time, but I really like Mary Cassatt's At the Theater. It's so wonderfully luminous and full of vibrant yellow.
