There seems to be a fair-sized art community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Nearby are lots of farms (though I don't know if the Amish object to being painted), museums, some cobblestone streets, and about an hour away my grampa owns some *beautiful* woods.

Hampton roads is not bad either.

Norfolk: D'art center (big collection of galleries). Since we have the biggest naval base anywhere, there's a lot of people coming and going. Also, WATER WATER EVERYWHERE. Nobody is more than 5 minutes from a river. Logically, there's a lot of boats to paint if you're into that sorta thing.

Virginia Beach: The pretty beaches go without saying. Unfortunately they're marred by the eye-burning blue and yellow of tourists' umbrellas XP Of more interest may be the Back Bay NWF. Great place to see wildlife, including wild horses. Pungo is a more rural section with pick-your-own farms and lots of horses. Also there is a Jerry's out here.

Don't know much about Hampton/Portsmouth/Newport News/Chesapeake

Martha's Vineyard deserves mention as well. Beautiful and quaint with a nice art community.

Don't forget Bucks county, PA (central and upper parts of the county). Often referred to as the "genius belt" due to the large number of nationally and internationally recognized artists - including writers, painters, musicians, sculptors and film makers. The community is tight and supportive of each other. Pricey to live here, a bit more difficult to break into the "scene" due to the amount of competition, but truly an artist's haven.

Carmel, CA is another hotbed of the creative types. Never been there, but I know a few artits who live in the area. they love it and seem to do well.

Martha's Vinyard has a very special feeling and energy to it, along with a rich history. (the quaintness is for the tourists!) Very expensive to live there, real estate is high, taxes are nuts and day to day living expenses are also very high since nearly everything has to be brought over by ferry. Unless you are an established artist who sells regulary off island, (or you have a really good day job on the island), this is a tough place to survive as a full time artist. Winters are long and isolated, also hidden problem - large number of alcoholism and drug use (especially heroin for some reason) amoung the year round people. I love my time there off season(april, May, Sept., Oct.) , hate it during tourist season - get rid of your car and use a bike or motorcycle and watch out for those boneheads on the mopeds.

"watch out for those boneheads on the mopeds"

Well that would explain the bumper stickers.

Being a Californian born and bred I have to say we have one of the most diverse states out of the 50.  We mountains, deserts, coasts, forest, farmlands and so on.  The winters are snowy to hot depending on where you choose to live. The summers are mild along the coast to extremely hot in Death valley.  And one big pluse is the senery -from urban to wildlands.  Is a artist's dream.  The down side we got too many people! Oh yeah, the politics is a no big plus here ether which makes it a very expensive state to live in.  Thats the high and the low of Califonia.

I think that Sedona AZ. or Sant Fe NM. are wonderful towns for artists. However real estate is very expensive and it would be difficult for a poor artist to find housing.
