This painting comes from a memory I had as a child of my Grandmother's Oriental Poppy garden. It's drawn with pen and ink and painted with watercolor- 8x10 on Canson Bristol Paper. I'm not sure I'm happy with the field of grass behind. Any pointers or suggestions are welcome... Happy painting...Nina

I like the field of grass- nice work, specially since it is done from memory.
Re: the house- i suggest that you find a direction for light and vary the values on the sides of the house to make it more 3D.

Very nice illustrative quality to it. It's happy and cheerful and takes me back to reading (well, actually my mom tried to get me to read, but I chose books by the illustrations and looked at them) when I was growing up. I agree with Priti on the light source. Just a couple of pointers for the future - watch for items "lining up" - examples here are the roof line meeting with the distant grass line, the clothesline pole with the bottom of the roof and the poppies with the top of the fence. Varying heights will add dimension and interest. Also, although you're recalling the image, think about how poppies grow - could it be possible that some grew out between slats and appear in front of the fence? Things like that will also add to the appeal. Keep going! I want to see more.

Thanks Priti and Kim for the pointers. I'll try to keep it all in mind on my next one. This is the first time I tried pen and ink with watercolor and I really like it. The drawing is very relaxing. Priti, On the actual painting there is more contrast between the sides of the tar paper roofed shed, but do you think I should have gone really dark? Kim, you're right- It seems like sometimes I forget about composition. One of my weak areas to work on. I seem to be in a watercolor period now, ( Pearl's fault-lol ) -am experimenting with lots of techniques. So I'll be posting more in the future. Thanks again for your pointers. that is the kind of feedback I find invaluable. Happy painting..Nina

Nice work Nina. If you wanted to you could fill in with more grass different heights and hues. The one thing that I think would really help is if you added some shading to the sheet to give it folds and more depth. More shadow on the left hand side of the building and ground shadow to match. Just my humble opinion.

All the best,
Jim
