To get depth/intensity of colour in watercolour depends on how you like to work. Some of us like to apply layers of paint to build intensity , by using thin washes , letting the paint dry completely then adding another layer/ glaze , repeating until the desired value is achieved.. Intensity can also be achieved by applying thicker ( more pigmented ) washes to get a lot of colour at once.

I hope this is what you wanted to know  and will be of some help to you. If not , ask more questions.OK?

Also, placing opposites next to each other in or through out the painting (depending upon the subject) intensifies hues. I hope this helps.

Intensity always seems easy, its the color right out of the tube! The thing that really makes color come alive for me anyway, is having the courage to add subtle amounts of other colors, and using that as part of value changes, texture, etc.

I would reiterate all of the above advice, espcially Jay's. We get into colour ruts where we only are comfortable with certain backgrounds, washes, etc. The best thing is to break out of the "rut" and try different colours, textures, and brush strokes that will compliment the POI. Good Luck and thanks for future beauty!
