Pearl,
I think it is a beautiful Red Rose,

If you added some cool blue green to the near shadow area closest to the rose and take off a little more color on the outer edge of the shadow by wetting it and using a clean dry brush or tissue to remove some color. Also I would soften the back edge. Too much of a hard edge attracts the eye. Also lighten it a bit back there as well but leave it dark nearest the rose.
Your leaves and Rose is one of the prettiest ones I have ever seen done. Well done!

I should have said to darken the area of the rose shadow in the back of the main body. Wouldn't touch the front shadow nearest the top of rose. But would reduce pigment color near the edge in front.

Thank you so much.  I painted a rose, like yours, but I did all the work.  Your approach, it seems, is to let the paints, water and paper do the flower.  I like your way better.  The thing I love most about watercolors is that the work always gets better when it dries,  almost magically.  "It's almost never what you see is what you get". People like you make painting fun. Again, thank you and, "I love the Rose".

Widduck .. , Thank you so much for the critique , I do appreciate your good suggestions , unfortunately as I had used heavy pigment and did a lot of scrubbing out to improve the shadow the paper was starting to protest and as it was a demo painting I felt there was a lesson to be learned from my problem for anyone who followed the demo so decided to leave it as is .

John.. Thank you for dropping in and showing your roses,  they are lovely , You were ambitious painting a whole bouquet.  Great reflections from the vase by the way.
Yes, painting wet in wet is always a surprise and that is what I love about it . Mind , not all the surprises are good as I found out with my shadow .

Pearl,
This demo has been a big winner here. I'm not sure, but I think you have the most views ever for a single
post on this forum. Maybe Holly could check that for us. I am very glad you are part of this group and hope to see more WIP and great paintings from you. I just went through all 30 pages here in the watercolor forum and you are the winner! Don't know about the rest of the forum, but here you are the champ!

All the best,
Jim

Great observation, Jim--and you're right! At this point Pearl has 3478 views for this demo. The next highest thread on the Watercolor & Gouache forum has 1840 views.

Pretty impressive, Pearl, and the attention is well deserved.

I finished painting the rose wet on wet although I had fun ( my first time in this technique) it came out badly. In my opinion anyway. I always soak the paper, stretch it , let it dry, then paint. I really had a time controlling the watercolor this time. My rose turned out wider than the picture because of that so it looks like a rose starting to wilt a bit. But thank you Pearl, I don't plan to give up on this technique. Will keep trying until I get control of it...
