In the Sring of 1942 three bombardiers were flying in a B-17E over a bombing range. Each was to take a turn on the bombsight and drop blue100 pound practice bombs. On the first run the bomb rack failrd to release a bomb. Same problem on the second .run. They decided to manually drop the bombs at the signal from the bombardier at the bombsight. No room for a parachute the two would straddle the open bomb bay to drop the bombs. When the bomb was dropped there was a feeling to go along with it. That was the most hazardous thing I ever did. |
