This is something new for me-I have discovered hot press paper and have been using a pen to draw the picture and then using watercolor to fill in.  Comments please.  Seems like when I am posting in mixed media, no one looks, so I thought I'd post here in watercolor instead.

You are correct Deb. This is the better place to post your watercolor and ink. There is more life here.

Deb, this bottom one of the trees is particularly pleasing to me. Love those purple trees! Gene

Gene,

Thanks, for your comment.  I really enjoy these little sketches.  Easy to whip up!  I have been doing these in my plein air sessions because they are quick and I can capture the moment a little bit better.  These I did at home off of photos and it's fun to just mess with the smaller pieces for fun.  Glad you like!

Deb . I especially like what you have done in the bottom painting. Good depth and the colours are wonderful . love it.

I really like these - both of them. You seem to be developing a good relationship with the paper.
And speaking of paper, hot pressed is smoother than cold, right? I may have to try it if that's the case. Your work sure makes me want to.

Thanks for the compliment Kim,

Yes, hot press is almost like it was ironed flat.  I like both weights, 90 and 140.  The 90 is of course a little bit less in cost, so for fun, I buy a large sheet and cut up into a bunch of 5x7's and have some fun with the watercolor and pen.  Give it a try!  I had never used it before and now I just love working on it.  I tend to like rough paper too, instead of cold press.

Deb, in your reference to rough paper --- Many years ago (about 30) most watercolorists used rough paper.  It gave a beautiful white sparkle to a painting as the brush slightly rested in passing across the paper.  Most of my  paintings back then were on rough paper.  I now use cold press.  These days "Photo Realism" seems popular and that does not work on rough paper.

LT,

Thanks for the info.  I really enjoy working on the rough and hot because the paint doesn't soak in as quickly (so it seems) or possibly its the way the cold press absorbs the paint is that I don't like about it.  I do use it, but find it more fun to work on the other two types.

Hi Deb and Lung Tom,
On the other hand. Hot press is specially suited to illustration, especially for line work. It reproduces well.
