Hey there, long time no post!  Here's one I've just about finished.  I took the time to take pictures of each step. Hope eveyone is well and being very creative this summer!

I wrote before that I don't use resist fluids however, I found this new goo called "Masquepen" which I wanted to give a whirl.  I have to say it makes painting around nooks and crannies easier and faster but not sure I'll be using it that often.  It has blue dye of some sort kinda swirled at the bottom and of course the first thing I did was shake it up to mix it before I applied, then, read the label that says "don't shake" !  I think it didn't make a difference and I liked the greenish color better than the blue after mixing it.

I'll post the finished painting when it's done.  Thanks for looking!

Pablo, good to see you posting again!!!!
As always this piece like the others is absolutely beautiful. You are certainly a master when it comes to watercolors...

I can't wait to see this progress. How well you capture the flesh tones. I can see the dynamics in the face already.
A word about Masquepen. I just used it on the clouds in a landscape so I could just swish a seamless blue sky. When I went to take the Masq. off the clouds, some of the paper came with it.
I'm glad you had better success than I did.

You have indeed full control of the media and at the same time it is so full of atmosphere - simply a masterpiece!

Thanks Mike, still having computer problems! ug! and of course a summer with a house full of kids doesn't help the painting time any!

Kassie, I don't know much about Masquepen, I know that Frisket when you leave it on too long bonds with the paper, I only used the Masquepen for about a day so maybe that's why it came off easy?

Thanks Tinae, not sure I'd call it a masterpiece, but thanks! I'm almost done stay tuned!

Hi Pablo,

I really like your painting style.  Both my daughter and I especially loved your "Queen of the Flowers".  I'm sure this new one will be equally as impressive.  It's amazing how you can get so much realistic detail with watercolor.  I know I have alot to learn but would appreciate any advice you can give to put me on the right path.  If possible, could you recommend any books that would put me on a good path to this kind of painting technique?

Thanks for sharing your work, I look forward to seeing more.

Grace

Finally done!  Thanks for all your kind comments again.  I appreciate the positive feedback.

gtummino:  There's tons of books on watercolor right now, seems like a new one comes out every hour and lately it's been Loose and Washy and Yuppo which I think is really exciting but not for me.  Watercolor Magic is of course a great source of techniques and info and North Light Books is also a great site to look at the hundreds of books.  If I think of any, I'll post it for you.  Glad you liked Xochitl.  More to come!

The skin tone is very natural. I wouldn't change a thing. It is great that you can put in so much detail and not overwork a piece.

Pablo is there any chance you could include your pallette? I sure enjoy your demos and find them very useful.

Hi Kassie, Sandeep! Thank you thank you! I really got into colors on this one, it was fun.

Joy, I took your advise and changed the blouse color from the last one I did, traditionally, they wear white blouses but for art sake, I had to change it!

Thanks Gene!

Wingman: here's the colors I used
Skin: Transparent Yellow, New Gamboge, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Sepia. ( same for hair)

Headdress: Black mixture: Sepia, Aliz Crimson, Perm Sap Green, Prussian Blue, Paynes Grey, (mix it all together and you get a black that you can change from warm to cool without getting muddy)

Blouse: Perm. Aliz Crimson, Prussian Blue, New Gamboge.

Background: Sap Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, New Gamboge, Aliz Crimson.

AND: Lots of water!

Thanks again for your feedback!

Absolutely stunning work! A pleasure to watch your painting progress!

I was also interested in reading about the masking fluids....especially that it is difficult to remove if left on too long....something to keep in mind.

Cheers Sandy

Pablo,

Your work is superb.  You are an inspiration.  Will you be my mentor?  That was a rhetorical question.  Kind of like will be my valentine.  All kidding aside you are wonderful talent.  I hope and pray that one day I will be half as good as you are.

Kris

Here is a tip from an old man of 87 years.  Before applying Masquepen apply a light wash of watercolor on the paper or mix a little GUM ARABIC in water and wash it on the paper.  That will prevent the Masquepen from clinging to the paper causing a tear. Assuming you are not using a rough grade paper.
