I did this as a still life challenge for another forum and welcome your comments. I included the reference photo; I put them on a plate because I don't know how to paint fabric folds, and wanted to overlap the foreground with the background a little. I realize I could have put something on the right side of the plate, as it looks a little empty to me.

For some reason, the ref photo won't come through; I'll try again now.

I think this is lovely. Years ago I painted the peppers out of my garden, I put them on a tan tablecloth fabric, the fabric was the hardest part, and I think it looks like sand rather than fabric.
Your peppers and lemons look yummy! I don't know if you need something on the right side or not.

Very nice peppers, Joy. I like the background you chose. I don't think you have the right ellipse on the platter, however. What do you think? I also wonder about the dark (shadow?) on the left side of the red pepper in the bowl. Doesn't that contradict the shadows on the right? But maybe this is just how it photographed. I always wish we could see these paintings in real life. Wouldn't that be fun? Thanks for sharing..............Gene

Joy, you're done an outstanding job with the peppers - great colorations; you captured their waxy surfaces very well. I agree with the above comment, too, about the elipse.
You're continuing to progress nicely. I can tell that you're really trying. Nice background.
In the future to create more interest, maybe the bowl could be off-centered and turned a little so that the viewer is not looking straight into it.

Thanks for the support and help!! I was trying to give the bowl a little depth, and the colors in the shadows did not transmit well. I thought maybe the ellipse on the right side of the plate was too rounded also.

Very nice. You're very good at rendering textures I see; the peppers and lemons look amazing. One thing I have to say though is that I agree with the elipse thing. I'm pretty much a perpetual art student and I feel like I'm never going to graduate, but one thing many of my teachers have mad us do is focus on elipses. I had one drawing teacher who was an elipse and straight line maniac. You have to practice at it.

Try measuring accurately and begin your elipse with straight lines, measure each general angle shift around the outside of it and transfer that angle onto your paper with a straight line. Soon you will have a rough outline of the elipse made up of overlapping lines and you can go from there. Move your arm from your shoulder, not your wrist when drawing an elipse.

Another thing is not to be afraid of fabric. With enough practice you'll be able to do it. It's just a matter of breaking fabric into angular structures, folded or draped fabric can usually be broken down into triangles. With the right underlying structure, you'll be able to paint convincing fabric. Just don't be scared of it!

Baja:

Thank you! You seem to know as much as the teachers. Those are excellent tips.

Joy, anyone who can paint as well as you, should not be afraid of painting folds. I agree that the elipse on the right is too round and doesn't match the left. Your textures are beautiful, not only on the peppers, but also your background. It is soft and beauiful and I love the colors in it.
Good Work!
