Hi There-  I'm a long time lurker and admirer of the art and artists on this forum.  Many times I've been just blown away by the talent represented here.

I've been dabbling with watercolors with a friend- and find I like them more and more.  I finished this composition this morning- it's a rendering of a photo someone emailed to me, wanting a painting of their dog for framing.

I'd love some feedback- I was stumped when it came to painting the splashes in the water.  They came out looking so stylized.  I'm happy with the overall painting, but I'd love some tips or techniques for painting moving water in the future.

Any other tips and critiques would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for looking!

I realized that maybe a closer view would help...

Someone bothered to leave me one star but didn't bother to say why?

Boy. Way to take the wind out of an ameteur artist's sails.

Makes me feel down. I'm not a pro, so I don't have very thick skin. I guess that's why I don't post. Maybe I should remove this thread.

Hi One,
It's to bad we even have the star system. At first we were told that it was set up to show
how busy traffic was to your painting. Then we are told it's a rating system. One by the way,
I do not like. It really does not reflect talent, but shows one persons like over another. I don't care
how good you are or how much better you think you are then someone else, no one should get one star!!
Please disregard the one star onebarkingdog. Most of the artists here are very helpful and not full of themselves.
Your work is very good. Especially in the watercolor medium you used. Since I am a watercolor artist, I know how
difficult it was for you to achieve the work you produced. The water looks great, you have a very stylized background that makes your dog stand out and you splash is just fine. Your limited palette is a nice touch too.
Is there a name we could use to call you instead of onebarkingdog? It would make it a little more personal and probably shorter to type.
Jim - see, very short. Easy to type.

I like the way you have the motion of the dog, splashing and the reflection without overworking. I believe the star system is to rate the thread for its teaching capacity. That is, even an excellent work without a lot of comments may not teach a lot. Animals are very difficult to do and I think you did a good job.

...yes, please do not go away discouraged! Almost everyone on this forum is friendly and helpful...and some quieter people no doubt just look...not being the type to speak out quickly.

Also, though many of us try to come on and see what's up and be very encouraging (since we know how it feels!) it can be a bit more hit or miss than you'd think a first...people get overlooked...people get busy... and noone knows what other peoples stars mean

This is beautiful.. watercolor I think is a  hard medium to master...won't see me doing it...keep painting and keep posting!!

You did an awesome job. Especially with the water splash. The person that gave you one star probably made a mistake. You deserve at least a 4

Very nice work!
I wouldn't worry about the stars. There is a lot of really nice work on here, such as yours, that hasn't received any stars at all....doesn't mean anything.
Please keep posting, your work is very good and a treat to view!

It seems to me someone should write to the administrator about the star system. Everyone seems to have a different idea about what they mean. I don't even know how to do that and don't want to know. I think your painting is delightful. Like someone else said earlier, you seem to be very good at watercolor, which I agree is very difficult to do. Good job!

Wow. If you originally only got 1 star, I'd be afraid to post some of my stuff. Nah, screw em.

Seriously, well done.
