Hi All

Posting after a very long time. Some commitments on the personal front ensured that I could not paint for the last few weeks.

This is a painting of the ramparts of an old fort (more than 5 centuries old) on the outskirts of the city I live. These forts were built on high inaccessible mountains to ward of enemy attacks. Fierce battles were fought to control it due to its strategic location. The view is taken from long to bring the difficult mountain region in perspective.

Would like to have your views and comments please.

Sandeep

Hi Sandeep,
I'm sure that Tanaji Malusare would recognize from your rendering of these mountains what he lost his life for. I like your paintings. Your softness of colors belie the violence shed over these hill top forts and gives your paintings a tranquiltiy that mirror what time and the erosion of nature also bring to the most violent episodes of men. Are you painting Kondana (Sinhagad), only, or will you enclude Rajgad, Purandar and Torana?

Hi Leon
I am simply (pleasantly) AMAZED at your comment!!! Your comment is the most unexpected...beyond my wildest imagination. I frankly had not anticipated anyone to have heard of Sinhagad, let alone Tanaji Malusare, Kondana, Rajgad, Purandar and Torana!!! That you have actually visited them (so it seems to me, I may be mistaken) is wonderful.
When did you visit the Pune region? Do let know if you plan to make a visit again.
I have not planned a series as you mentioned, but would like to do it in the future. But work and family commitments impose their limitations, else I would like to go to these forts and paint on location. For now, I have to rely on my photographs.
Btw, thanks for your appreciation.

Hi Sandeep,

I am sorry to say that I’ve never been to Pune, India.  I’ve always have had a love of history and that is what my degree is in and I was so intrigued by your description of your painting that I researched that area, as I was not familiar with it.  It was fascinating to me to discover that the Pune area apparently had trade links with the Romans.  I don’t live in an area with as much rainfall as yours, but there are the abrupt changes in altitude and I’ve included a picture to give you an idea.

Hi Leon
Its great to know of your active interest in history. Your earlier comment did give an impression that you had been to Pune earlier. The landscape you have posted does give a good idea of the altitude changes. I saw your paintings on the website mentioned in your comment. Nice work.

The mountains and colors are great. I probably would crop it so there is not the same amount of sky as land- maybe two thirds land and one third sky.

Thanks Joy. I am planning to have a more detailed version of the fort ramparts. I have done the drawing and put the first wash in place. Lets see how it turns out with some more detailing of the fort walls.
