I would appreciate any C & C. I left the background impressionistic because I wanted the birds to stand out against. Thus the use of complementary colors.
Happy New Year!!! |

Hi Joy, I like the background and the Jays, but I think its just looks strange to have them just hanging there. A Branch for the top one to be on and the lower Jay to be flying to would be nice. Here's an example. It's a rough sketch. Just a thought. Hope you don't mind Jim

Hi Joy Very nice painting. Good colors. The actionhas been captiured very well. I also liked the background wet in wet effect. As Jim has mentioned, a branch / twig for the top bird to stand on might help...though I think a very short one just below the feet may do the trick. Sandeep |

Thanks for the suggestions; I should have included the ref photo in my original post, so I am doing so now. The birds were clinging to bark, so I may add some vertical lines to give an impression of the tree trunk.
I really appreciate you taking the time to look and comment on my work! |

I'm finally getting around to posting the finished version; thanks for your help. I added some impressionistic bark in the background. I didn't want to take away from the details of the birds. |

Very nice Joy. I like what you have done. Not that what you had wasn't well done either. Jim

| I like your improvements, also. If I were you, I think I would have a few lines, or shadows directly under the top bird's claws to show exactly what it is clinging to. I think your vertical tree in the background makes more sense than the branch. Didn't you have a tough time getting rid of that branch? What kind of paper are you using that allowed you to remove it so well? Gene |

Sweet painting! For the next one, try squinting your eyes from time to time during the process to filter out the color so you are mainly looking at the value of the colors in addition to using the contrasting colors. I see what Gene is saying about seeing where the weight of the bird is being grounded, but I think that the piece has enough movement to keep your eye interested. Good job! Kelly |

Your suggestions have helped me so much ; I appreciate that you took time to look at my work, considering all of the beautiful work posted here.
Gene: I used Strathmore 140# CP, but the brach was never "on" the original painting. It was a good suggestion by Jim to ground the birds more. He just altered my image. I don't mind this at all; I'm happy to receive all of your help!! I'm quite a slow painter, and have a lot of other things that require my attention, so I appreciate your patience and comments on the stages of my work. /b] |

I think the final outcome works really well. . . . I love blue jay blue color ( and this works really well with your background), unfortunately I have issues with blue jays. Hope to see more of your work soon! D~ |
