Hi

I do watercolor paintings on handmade paper, and over the last few months have had made around 20-25 paintings. This figure will rise with time. Currently I store them flat in a dry area in polythene display folders, but am not sure if its the right way to store them for a longer period.

I would like to know what is the general practice of storing watercolor paintings done on paper. Every painting cannot be framed (its too costly and anyway all those frames cannot be stored at home due to space constraints). Neither does it have a ready buyer everytime.

Is laminating the painting a good option so that the paper does not get exposed to air / humidity / other factors? Does anyone have any experience on that? Also, if someone is to buy the painting, would they be averse to purchase a laminated painting?

It would be nice if you have some inputs on this front.

Thank you.

The only thing I'd warn against it laminating. Even if it's archival laminating stuff, I tend to think it won't be recieved well. I read about an artist who is trying varnishing her watercolors but dont really know about it.

Framing is expensive especially if you're prolific and not every piece sells, having that in mind, I started painting only standard size paintings a while ago so I can slip them in and out of matts instead of buying one for every painting and the cost on ready to hang frames is a third of a custom frame with mat.

I have my paintings that aren't framed in a large portfolio that I can slip behind furniture, I don't have a studio, just the kitchen table and a corner of the garage for storage. If you have the space, there are flat files you can get, I hear paper work tends to like laying flat rather than on it's side in a folder.
Anyhoo, that's my two cents worth!

Thanks Duende
Your response does throw a lot of light on the matter. I too was skeptical as to how people would receive it if the paintings were laminated. It follows that that the way I am currently storing paintings is good enough...lying flat, away from dust and moisture!
