So these are two roses and I'm trying out some new color choices for me, just trying to push myself along.  Hope you enjoy!

Both are just beautiful. I love the color choice of the background in the 1st painting. It really makes the white pop. The 2nd painting is definitely my favorite....I love the detail work in the petals. And the subtle background on this one was a great choice.

These are both beautiful; lovely color variation in the petals. I think some more warm colors and some darker value in the first painting would really make the rose "pop".

My vote is for the top one. Very delicate and it almost seems translucent

There are two lasting bequeaths we can leave for our children, one is roots and the other is.....wings.

I wanted to vote...but refrained from it...would have been unjust to the other one.

These are very nice. I agree that maybe the top one could use some warm colors in the petals. The bottom one is particularly beautiful.............Gene

Hey, thanks everyone for your comments. I like the coldness of the first one, it's the first time I painted with out of the tube black(I've always mixed my own black) and grumbacher turqoise, not sure I like either but they were on sale and I just had to get them. The second one was done with Permanent rose which I've fallen in love with, New Gamboge which is another one of my new favorites.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a good yellow they can recomend? I find the Cads very opaque and transparent a little too transparent for some things.

Yeah the cads are SO opaque, and Aureolin and Hansa are so light. Indian Yellow is nice - kind of a compromise and it mixes well.

Duende I can see what you were saying about these. You were trying a cool colour combo with the first one.
and you succeeded. With the second one, thanks I c an now see why flower painters so often put permanent Rose in their palettes.

As far as yellows are concerned - I found Australian Red Gold - an Art Spectrum (Australian firm) colour, a really interesting transparent. The colour is as the name suggests. I used it in my shed washes/glazes in NZ Landscape breakthrough post.

Another yellow I am using - Naples Yellow - a Winsor and Newton (English firm) colour, is the most beautiful soft creamy yellow opaque. I found it wonderful for a portrait and would no doubt also be useful for soft creamy flower colours side by side with transparents.

I've never seen Australian Red Gold, sound yummy. I've never tryed Naples either, I'll have to do that too. I have a pretty limited palette, I've chosen colors that work well together and make most everything I need with them, but I also am open to new ones cause let's face it, going into the art store is dangerous! I carry a list and run through or I get in trouble.
Thanks for the color info!

Thanks Retha, I like the bottom one the best also, gotta love that permanent rose! also great color for orchids or anything electric-ee-ish, but it was fun and interesting to use the new colors on the top one.

I think I forgot to post a link to these paintings on Flicker, stop by if anyone has a moment! much better images!
