This is an 8" x 10" study of a buff bellied hummingbird. I didn't want to do the typical hummer drinking from a flower, so I left the flower out. I wasn't quite sure what to do with the background, but I wanted to keep it simple. Originally it was too dark, and I wiped it out and put in some cerulean (my husband Jerry's suggestion) and violet. The green feathers at the throat were done with Winsor-Newton irridescent medium. It shows up much better in person, but you can see it a little bit on the detail. I would like to compose a painting with several different types of hummers without the typical flowers. Any suggestons would be appreciated.

Nice capture of the bird in mid flap. Well done.
You could do several around a feeder. Showing some landed and
some at different angles in flight too.

Hi Joy
Nicely done. Personally I would have liked a much lighter background with some abstract shapes suggesting the flowers (wet it wet effect perhaps). Nevertheless a nice painting.
