Oh please, do not make the same mistake I've made, of destroying your work! Twice, I've destroyed complete bodies of work in my frustration to try and reach "perfection" (which does not exist). The last time I did this, about a year ago, my husband rescued the torn canvasses and drawings from the trash. He put them away where I could not easily find them. Just recently, I found those works and was quite suprised to discover that in those works, I saw the footprints of where I am today as an artist. For example, in some, I saw really nice brushwork, but the composition or colour harmony was off. It wasn't a bad work, it was a growth work - I just had not pulled together all of the elements in a way that satisfied me at the time. I was trying to be a perfectionist, not an artist capturing life, this was my lesson.
I look at this and again, I see you capturing the eluvise - beautiful brushwork on the grasses - full of life and vairiety, delicately rendered mountaints that truly convey distance and atmostphere. Not a failure. |

| I agree. This work looks like it is really going somewhere. What is left of it seems to be a really good composition. You have good perspective on the building. Paint it again and see what happens. |

Lung Tom, I viewed this posting late last night before anyone had made a reply. I didn't reply because I really didn't know what to say. After a good nights sleep and after reading the replies of the others ( which all were very good) I do want to give my opinion. Every time you attempt to create a piece of art, you learn something, and you may not recognize it at the time. You will never be completely satisfied with any piece of art that you do. Somewhere between the start and the finish of any piece of art there will be a temptation to give up and quit. You must resist that temptation to give yourself a chance to be successful. These statements are my personal opinion and have always helped me to keep going. I hope they will help your outlook on your artistic endeavors.

| I agree with Matrese and Ron and the others. Don't give up on this. You are too hard on yourself. I have tons of paintings in a plastic container under my bed that I occasionally take out to look at to see how far I have come. And sometimes, to start over on. Or to complete or fix. I am a late bloomer, and have so much to learn, but when I look back at what I was doing six years ago when I first started, I find out that I have indeed improved. Most of the "accomplished" artists that I know are constantly in the process of learning. So, keep on painting. Your work is really very nice, you know....................Gene |
