A Friend of mine is a photographer and he had this one on his web-site. I asked him if I could paint a watercolor of it. He said sure, but why? It's just a women sitting on some steps at a shelter. I said exactly. It tells a story of "Quite Desperation". Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, what a difficult angle to paint! Feels sad, the darks and slumped shoulder help portray the lost feeling..very good job! Interesting, that even though we know the story, this could be anyone who is sad and lonely!

Thanks Anna,
Not exactly a glamour piece, but even though it doesn't have the color or detail of some of my previous works, I'm happy at the way it turned out. I sent the photo to Heather to help me with the angle and perspective on it. Photos do strange things to reality.
Thanks again Anna.

Wow! Jim, this painting has so much more atmosphere than the photograph you did it from. You have brought this young woman to life, and your perspective is right on! The lighting is very effective. Really well done.

Thank you Heather,
Your help with angles and perspective were very much appreciated.
I put a black matt around this and it really sets it off. I guess not to many people
like the message of the painting here, but people who see it in real life seem to
think it's message comes across well. Oh well, can't always paint happy thoughts.
Hey, I saw J Ramesh was back. Glad to see him commenting again.
Thanks again Heather,
Jim

I really like the design and composition in this. It is very strong and holds together well.
Really interesting assembly of verticals, horizontal and diagonal lines.
My only suggestion would be perhaps some shadow under the woman's dress and
feet as she appears to be floating a little bit. Nice job.

p.s. I have to ask, do you mean "Quiet" Desperation? (not quite) as in the famous Thoreau quote from
Walden "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation".
I can be a pain. Just ask my wife

Sorry Lancelink,
Your right, it's suppose to be Quiet. Jeez I must have been suffering from dislexia or
something. Maybe just plain ignorance. Thanks for the comments and feedback. I would
like to say it was from Thoreau, but what I was thinking of was a Pink Floyd song from Dark side of the moon. One of the lines is "Quiet desperation is the English way".
Thanks,
Jim

One of my all time favorite albums. "Breathe" is the song I believe.
I always suspected Roger Waters was tactfully borrowing from Thoreau, I guess only he knows.

Jim, I agree that a black mat will be just the thing for this one.  And yes, it is good that J Ramesh is back, we have missed him.  But obviously he has been very very busy.

Lancelink,
It's one of my all time favorites too. I was lucky enough to see them in concert when I was still in the Navy in San Diego.

Hi Heather,
Did J Ramesh post something that I missed? Haven't seen anything besides his comments.

Hi Jim...........I like your painting. I agree that she needs some shadows to anchor her feet. Easy enough to add, if you want. I like your choice of colors, also. And she does suggest a "quiet desperation",doesn't she?........ Yes, it is good to see Ramesh back. Thanks for sharing this painting. Gene

Hi Gene,
Thanks for taking a look and your comments. I will add some shadows to her feet.
I still can't believe I spelled Quiet wrong! Jeez!

Hey, Jim, that wasn't mis-spelled. That was a mere typo! I do it all the time. My typing gets ahead of me sometimes and I leave out letters, mis-spell words, or add letters. Come to think of it, I am beginning to do that with my handwriting, as well. I put it all down to the getting older thing! You know, "senior moments" that are occurring more and more often. But who's looking at spelling or typing? We're here for the art. And this one is very nice. ............Gene

Thanks Gene,
Senior moments...., I guess it happens to all of us eventually. The person that gave me permission to use
the photo that the painting is based on, e-mailed me back and said the painting was in his words " Awesome dude!!". He asked if he could include it in a blog that other photographers subscribe to. I said I'd be honored.
Can't wait to hear the feedback on that!
Thanks again for your kind words,
Jim
