I made all three of them on pastel paper. The cat is my first animal pastel work. Horses are the last ones. Thanks for any comments given.

personally, I am not a fan of animal portraits; however the one of the cat is very nice! I love the colours you used.

Suna - Welcome to the forum! I would like to say I have never tried animal portraits - but that's not true - what I can say is that I have made a huge mess of animal portraits! (And I have never tried again!) I love your horses and cat. When I was very young, I had a cat very much like yours. This picture brings back some warm childhood memories. I especially like the white horse - he looks very old and his expression says to me that someone has just scratched his ears. I can almost hear his sigh of pleasure as he waits for more! Look forward to seeing more of your work. Why don't you join in our Weekly Photo Challenge?

Thank you very much hollyga. I have a collection of horse photographs which I took in a horse riding club some years ago. This horse was having a nap and looks very relax. I agree with you, he waits for more scratchs Why not try painting animals again? I paint them from photographs a take. I work slow, maybe I can't finish a work a week, but I'll like to join the Weekly Photo Challenge soon, thank you.( Is your name Holland?).

Suna - I do have a really great picture of a friend's cat hiding in the grass that I really want to try but that will be an exercise for a little later. I have never been one to work fast either and the idea of finishing a painting in 1 week was frightening to me but I have just jumped in. I haven't finished my lilies (challenge # 5) yet, but that's OK - it's not like the "finish this police" are going to come and cart us off for not finishing in a week. They are just great exercises. And, yes, my middle name is Holland - or shortened to Holly. I use it in all of my art community stuff but I am Susan to the rest of the world. Too many Susans around - makes the world confusing! Holland or Holly on these art forums is less confusing to all.

Holland, I looked at your lillies! They are very nice. The composition is good; the color you have choosen is also good, warm and pleasing. I like it. Waiting to see it finished.
For the cat picture I want to say something; when my photograps are good in light, color and expression, I discovered that the painting is also easy to make. I don't have a strong memory, I can't make realistic paintings from memory only. I like taking photos and enjoy making paintings out of them. Light is very important in photography and also in paintings I think. If your reference photo is not good, maybe that's the reason you didn't like your previous animal paintings.
To enter The Weekly Challenge, first I must have my printer repaired I need a copy of the photo in my hands to work with. Soon, I will try to complete a painting in one week. I work alone and get bored very often. Nice to have you around here
