Hello everyone!

I am having a great time painting these Irish scenes.  The colors are so wonderful and exciting.  What do you think of this one?

I got some gesso and fine pumice gel for xmas and made up a couple of larger size sanded papers.  It worked out wonderful!  I just love the way it grabs the pastel.  I used some 140 watercolor paper and taped it down to a board and two coated, once in each direction, drying between coats.

I would appreciate comments.

Deb, you're capturing the essence very well. In this particular painting, I think it would have been more attractive if the bottom of the scene started where the change of color in the road (or is it water? looks like there's a reflection of the bright green grass on the left) begins or just before. I understand about the appeal of looking down a road and seeing the cottage (which is quite common there), but I'm not sure it makes for the best composition, especially being right down the middle. However, I really like how you painted the grasses on the sides, and especially on the right side under the fence posts - beautiful textures and hues. One of your strong points that I so admire is how you "fill in" with your pastels; even though a person can't make out exactly what something is, (ex. what's at the end of the road in the distance), there's not the need to try and figure it out - it's natural looking. I hope that makes sense. Another strong point is your success with experimenting with color - outside the box in a sense and it works. I'm really trying to learn from you.
Just a side note - I'm enjoying "reading" your enthusiasm and seing it show up in your work. Keep it up!

Kim,

This is definitely a work in progress.  I have added some more light to the rightside of the painting and working it so it does not look like water, which it kinda does.  Also I appreciate your comments on the the way the grasses look.  that was difficult to get the colors correct and I am slowly getting the feel of the colors.  I learned in my pastel classes to not always stick to the photo for the colors.  That photos tend to be a bit off on the real colors so I start with hard pastels that are blocked into the space to give some interest as I layer the rest of the colors.

Thanks!  I have a few more to do and then I will end this series, but I just love the simpleness of these shots and having never been there, I want it to look real.

Happy New Year!
