| Before I did this one, I thought pastel is pastel, why paint it like oil? So I picked up the sticks and paint it with all strokes. Of course, the model did not like it because too rough. I am not sure. What do you think? |

She has a lot of character and is a good subject. I like the result very much and I think it's very well done. I bet if the model saw a painting done this way of someone else, she would like it. I like how you used the different colors to gain the texture of the shirt. I also like how the bangles reflect the surrounding colors. (Just curious, was it hard to not blend? ) |

Beautiful painting. I love the highlights in her hair. I think the roughness or texture in the pastel is just right in the model. But, IMHO, I think the background would look better blended instead of as strokes because I think it clashes with the model right now.

| Thank you all. I think I will try this style again for man portrait. To answer Kim's question, blending can add more layers, but stroke cannot. Every stroke counts, so some accuracy is needed. |

| What an interesting painting! Never saw something like this before. Harmonius all in itself! Also repetitive, I think. The top needs more empty space. --- Suna. |

Suna, I almost forgot that I had this painting. I did not paint this style any more, should I? Thanks for all your comments which helped me a lot. Just didn't have much time to reply. I appreciate it very much. sandra |

Sandra, You MUST study on this style. Also at every different style you catch by yourself. Don't limit yourself to anything. Try them all, and work on with the ones you love. My suggestion for you . You are very talented. --- Suna. |

Sandi,
The strokes are so lively and add vitality to the painting. It's a shame that the model didn't like the textural surface of the pastel, but that's what makes this painting so interesting to look at. The background is wonderful. I'm sure you already know that you can layer stroke over stroke, you just need a paper with a lot of tooth, like Kitty Wallis (sanded paper) and a light touch, and of course begin with "hard" soft pastels and progress to the creamy soft pastels like Great American or Unison. Again, it's a wonderful painting.......Linda |
