| Hi, I haven't posted before, thought I would begin with a picture of a tiger I did--actually one of several, I kind of went on a tiger kick. I really love them. Since it is difficult to get original photos of tigers, I have searched the net...now, how do I avoid breaking the copyright laws? On this picture, I just made up a tiger, but to do a whole body, running etc. would be difficult without copying someone else's photos. What do you do in this situation? |

Hi,
I won't comment on copyright issues since I'm not an expert. About your tiger : the colours are great and I like the dimensional feeling of his head and the foreshortened perspective of his legs and paws. The body to the left of his head should have (in my opinion) its value darkened, for it seems to be aside his head instead of behind. What do you think ?
Kind regards,
José |

Hi LaVilleLogan,
I'm new here and not being sure of copyright laws. What I can tell you is register at www.wetcanvas.com. Its free to artist and the site has 100's of thousands of photographs for artists to paint, draw, including animals. Best regards, Sketches |

Hi and Welcome! What I know about copyright is that you can not sell anything you copied from another persons photos without their permission. Painting something for fun is okay and changing the image to make it your own is okay. What I do is find photos on flickr.com and get permission first. Usually people will give you that and I have sent them a copy of my finished work. They all have been very impressed with what I have done with their art! Remember that all your work is automatically copyrighted and no one can copy what you have made.
Comment on this tiger: I think your detail in the face is beautiful, but the paws since they are in the front of the painting need some working. I like the colors for the background, and the way you have made that unfocused is beautiful.

I agree with Deb. I don't know if I'll ever sell anything but I make it a practice to always ask if it okay to paint someone else's photos. I have only encounter one person who told me I could buy the photo. Everyone else has very nice, and as Deb mentioned I always send a pic of my painting.
I also think the paws need a little work. I look forward to seeing this after you've redone it because it is a lovely painting.

Nice! I do agree on the paws needing work, but I love the colors!
Cpyright laws are very strict. If the owner of the rights can prove even remotely that you have used their image for your work, your in trouble. The piece just has to show that it "resembles" the original. You can find websites that have royalty free photos and copyright free photos, but to be honest with you, the best way is to use your own reference photos to work from. It's safe and you never have to worry about copyrights.......a zoo is a great place for reference photos!
One thing to keep in mind is that photography is a form of art. Each piece that the phographer creates is just like your art, so try to remember that when 'using' their photos for your art....
Great piece here! Mike |
