I'm not real happy with this one, but it's DONE! As always, I appreciate your comments... 12"x18", Colourfix paper and Unison, Schmincke, Rembrandt and others....
Thank you, Mike |

Mike, this is technically very good, and I can see a connection with the calicos and the faded paint on the car, but there still seems to be something missing. Even as you've said you're not very happy with it. I don't know...just seems to be missing the...tongue-in-cheeck, so to speak, of the others...or a tie-in with the title....or the tension of the others....something...can't put my finger on it. If any of that makes sense.???? lol

Thank you, Retha!
Christine, thank you also! Yeah, I'm not sure either on this one. I thought that the sanded paint pattern on the car would tie the calico cats in with it. I think I just need a break from this subject/series. I have one more in this series ( I have four and I don't like even numbers in anything!), so I'll move on to something else after I complete that one. I've had just about enough of the "Old cars and critters" series! Thanks for your input, Christine!!!

Hi Retha! Nah, I don't mind at all. I'm liking the idea of a third cat, however placement might be a problem. I'm thinking that the center of the wheel might not be a good place, but I'm not really sure where else would work??? The painting is gone now anyway, so I guess next time I'll have to 'plan' a little better! Thanks for the help! Mike |

Hi Mike,
I'm new here, but I had to comment. Your paintings are beautiful. There is such detail, such depth. Maybe that's what you are missing in the foreground. A touch of darker color to put the ground in under the front cat and the grass. When I read your comment that you don't like even numbers, I was thinking you needed another cat. And I know you said the painting is finished, but I was picturing a smaller calico just peeking out from behind the tire.
Anyway, they are beautiful paintings.

Mike,
This series is just a textbook on how to do that rusted out hulk look. The cats are nice too, much more detailed than I seem to be able to get when doing animals. As usual, great stuff!

Thank you, Pam and welcome!!!! Hope to see some of your work on here soon??? Yeah, the painting is actually gone so I'm finished...unless it comes back? I like the idea of a third cat. My intention was that the car/car's paint was one of the 'calicos', but most people don't see that, so a third cat would add balance to this piece.
Hi Barry! Thank you very much for your compliments. I strive for detail in my work and mostly in the animals because I love doing them. I use more pastel pencils in the animals than sticks because they are easy to sharpen and get the details out of. I'm really hesitent on 'breaking' and sharpening sticks so that I can get sharp points on them, but have I learned to so that I can have more color choices. |

| Hi Mike. The cat that is farthest away is incredible! I haven't seen one that looks that real. Very nice. Thanks for keeping me motivated. jjj |

This thought came to mind....I like finding things and being surprised, so my first thought was a little mouse in front of the tire! The cats would seem oblivious and that would be pretty funny! Other than that good job!

Hey! That's a great idea. Might be just the thing that's 'missing.'

Jay, thank you! I thought that cat turned out better also...you are welcome on the motivation and thank you also for motivating me to paint. Your work is looking fantastic!
Tracy, thank you! A mouse would have been a great idea, I'll have to remember that for the next one....
Christine, thank you also! Mike |

Mike I love the eyes of the cat in the background. But The one in the foreground has a problem. I think this is why your not to happy with it, it's not the composition. Is it. All that work is great....The fur and the rust. Great. glistening fur, you got it. I hope I am not speaking out of turn. I think the eyes of the that cat are bright and catch my attention and they are to close together or the nose is.....can you take a light(something in the same color of the nose) scrap of paper and cover the inside corner of the eye closest to the wheel and see if that helps. Thank you Rosie, I agree with you on the cat in front. It was one of those 'problem' subjects from the minute I started it. The painting is gone so fixing it isn't gonna happen, but I appreciate your help and knowledge. I think I was just tired of this piece and forced it to be done...and you know what happens after that, don'y ya???! Mike |

Mike, the painting is gone......someone bought it? Hey....Everytime I go in to the eye dr. he tells me the same story(like I never seen him before)...A art history garb of this artist that was comissioned to paint a portrait of a king or something...That he didn't like... in the painting he disorted a few things that only an artist would catch...the king was very pleased with the portrait. Alot of times we see the mistakes. I don't want to say regular people, but the people that aren't as detail oriented don't see what we see... So.........you sold the painting.....great. It's hard for me to understand that not everyone can see the mistakes I make....(my shelf of shame is also a closet) Keep them com'n Rosie Rosie |

Mike, this is great. And it's great that it is "gone", which I think you mean sold! It's a really good piece, so now, get on to the next one! You are really a talented artist. I wish I had half of your ability. I haven't posted in a long time, busy with home, family, etc. Still painting, but not posting. Have to get going, I know. Happy painting!

Rosie, the painting is in a shop over on the lake with several others. I'm really hoping it will sell!!!!! I don't want it to come back cause I'll have to take it apart and re-frame it if I do fix it...lots of work, but I guess I will if it doesn't sell! I just get tired of some pieces and don't want to see them again, if you know what I mean???
Gene, Thank you! I've started the next one "Dag....and cat afternoon" . It's posted as WIP and I'm working on it as I can. I was lucky enough to get 5 more greeting card commissions so I will be busy again and trying to 'fit in' all of the pieces that I want to do...no complaints though! I'm waiting to see your new work...soon I hope? I know what busy is, especially when it comes to family. Good to hear from you and keep painting! Thank you for the kind words... Mike |

No luck yet, Retha. I'm really hoping it DOESN'T come back, but I have that feeling, ya know?!! I'm gonna do a cop out and blame the economy if it and the others don't sell. It will make me feel better, but it is a cop out! ;-) Mike |
