Hello again,

This is one of my first pastels I did last year. It's my friend's son , Carter. It was my first time doing flesh and I don't know why, but skin tones terrify me. I still have yet to do a face but that will be next I guess... My dad passed away last month so I will try to get up the nerve to do a portrait of him for my siblings. Thanks for looking.

Marci,

The flesh tones do seem a bit tentative, but you have great instincts and do everything else so well that if I were you I would just trust those instincts and go for it. Love that tractor.

thanks Barry,

I'm not sure whether to go dark on the flesh tones first and then build to lighter tones or the opposite. I did the little boy last and the tractor had turned out so well that I was really scard to mess up on the skin. It is a bit tentative, maybe more shadows for his little ribs and cheeks? thanks for the comments. I think I will try to find a video on a pastelist so I can actually watch what they do . I've looked for demonstrations in my area but most of them are too far away and I have two little boys. Thanks again,

marci

Marci, this is adorable! Very well done and I love the detail in the tractor.
I'm sorry for your loss and I feel your pain. I lost my dad three weeks ago. You just don't know how much you're going to miss them until they're gone...
Fantastic piece here!

Marci...........I think the flesh tones are too light in this portrait. The little boy's body seems to just stand out too much instead of being part of the entire piece. You did a great job on the rest of the piece. In fact, very good! Gene

Yes the skin tones is not right,
here is a link to a demo on pastel skin tones.
Wet Canvas has nice ones too, but hey are busy working on the site now and its off line.

You have done back and tractor very well.
Hope this helps.

thank you Mike, Gene and Retha for your helpful comments.  You are all absolutely right and the little guy is too light.  thanks for the demo tip on skin tones. I also checked out a video from some artist website so I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks again. I really appreciate the help and advice.
