I was getting a little practice in on some color and lighting here. 9 x 12 size on Cranson paper. I plan on painting more elk in the future on larger paper and thought a profile picture would be a good place to start. Thanks for looking. jjj

Vey good start here, Jay!
This feels really warm cause of the lighting. The only things I might change is the composition, it's a little 'tight'. I know that this is a practice piece, but if it were a little less squeezed in, it would have a better feel to it. I really like the background, and your use of light.
Nice work!

I like this elk--you are drawing these deer-like bodied animals better, and with your choise of color for the lighting makes this interseting indeed to see. There are some changes in your style here that show you are growing, so don't discount them.  Keep it up!

Thanks you guys. I was just going to use this one for practice, then file it away to look at it when I needed to use it.  The piece ended up coming out pretty good and some of the people I showed it to said that I should keep it where someone could see it. It feels good to know that I am getting better and even my practice pieces are coming out nice. jjj

Great lighting. I have one suggestion, even if this is just a practice piece. If I were you, I wouldn't date my art on the front. If you ever do want to sell them, some people are turned off if the date is on it........makes the piece seem "old". That doesn't make it worth any less as a piece of art, but the general public sometimes thinks that. Gene

Thanks for the advice Gene. I never thought about selling my art before, but I was approached by a person from our town Chamber to put some of my art in the gift shop to sell. So, I'm glad I know about this now. jjj
