This is NOT a good pic, but since it's a WIP, I didn't think it would matter much. The final pic will be better. Also, the crop is not right. There is more space at the top of the piece than shown here.
One of the draft horses that live about 3 miles down the road. Thought the title fit this guy cause of his mane. The story of Samson's hair giving him his strength and all...
Mostly Unison and Sminckes on Jack Richeson sanded paper, 18"x24". I really like this paper and the main plant is loceatd here in WI so I frequent the discount store very, very often. It's a disease I tell ya!

Great job Mike. That was a quick turn around. I do have to say that I liked it darker before you finished it. Just a preference thing. I really is very well done. Jim

| I like the way you made part of the eye peer through the mane. Makes him look like a horse not to mess with. Glad to see more of your work. jjj |

Hi, Jim. Thank you, and I tend to agree with you on this. I was more pleased with the WIP than the finished piece. Of course, this is a pic from my cell phone. I will get a better pic up here next week and I might darken him up a bit. Thank you for commenting and being honest in your opinion. I appreciate that very much! Mike
Hey, Jay. Thank you also! Yeah, he is a big, intimidating looking guy, but I'll bet he's just as nice as can be. I tried to be a bit looser on this piece and I fought it all the way, but I'll keep plugging away. It's good to see you progressing in you work. I enjoy viewing it! Mike |

This will be hard for me to say......The mane and forlock , of course, is great, must of been what interested you to do this drafthorse, but , for me, the shoulder, neck and chest isn't so well drawn causing him to really look short-necked and its not clear where his shoulder comes and blends into his chest. Maybe the photo reference wasn't good, or too dark in this area for you to judge, and I know draft horses have heavy necks which may be why you've drawn it this way---and with cammera distortion, too, but its too short. And so doesn't have the look it should have as he swings his head around to peer thru his forlock. And yes, I have known many draft horses and just horses. But the pastle work is great!and the nose, too. |

Hi, Ida! Thank you very much for your honesty and advice. I appreciate you telling me these things, and I don't want you to feel in any way bad or have a hard time telling me your opinion, please. To be honest with you, I thought that something was off on this guy. I just couldn't place what it was. I also felt that he looked 'distorted' in some way. I thought maybe his face was short? Anyway, i'm going to go back on this and try and correct it. If I can't fix him, I'll trash it and start over...that's how an artist learns, and I certainly respect your opinon. I've seen your work and know that you know your stuff! Thanks again, Mike |

Samsons' having a bad hair day........ What are you going to do with the neck, I don't work with this medium is it adjustable? He's looking good otherwise, You can make it work I just know it. I'm coming back to see the next post. Keep up the great work...Rosie |

| Great painting, Mike, but someone has to buy that horse a good curry comb. Where do live in WI? The Jack Richeson plant is in Kimberly, isn't it? I grew up in Kiel and my sister lives in Chilton, and many others live all around WI. Have you ever attended one of the many workshops that Jack Richeson has? I have been thinking of doing that one of these days................By the way, remember my painting of the Wild Grape Leaf I posted a while back? (Actually, I think Jim posted it for me.). Well, I just got that painting accepted into a national pastel competition, which is going to be hung in the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I am absolutely thrilled. I mention it because I remember you made a nice comment about the light on that painting. I think that's what got it in. The show was juried by Alan Flattmann...............Anyway, I really love your pastels. You are right...........it's a disease! Gene |

Thank you, Rosie! "Samson" is taking a place on the shelf with "A rock and a hard place" (another piece that needs fixing). And, yes pastels are adjustable as long as you don't use too much fixative and you are working on GOOD quality paper. I just need to step away from this piece and come back later when I can look at it with fresh eyes. I have a good friend that is helping me to see the errors also. So, between her and I, it will get fixed. Thanks for the vote of confidence!!!!!
Gene, thank you also! It's good to hear from you as always. Congrats on getting juried in!!! I'm thinking most of us knew it would cause it's a very nice piece. I live in Wolf River WI. Just off of Lake Poygan, kind of in the central north east part of the state. Jack Richeson is located about 30-45 mins away. A nice ride on a weekend afternoon! I'm stll trying to learn this state. I come from Colorado and I always had the mountains to help me keep my bearings. Here, I get turned around very easily, so I keep a compass in my truck to help me out. Another thing about WI, is that a 5 mile drive turns into 20 miles cause of all the farmland, lakes or cheese factories a person needs to drive around...but, I truly do love it here. It is beautiful! And, after returning to Colorado for my Father's passing, I didn't miss it as I thought I would. Not only is it very, very dry, there are way TOO many people there! I think I've found me home here in WI. |

At least you just have a shelf of shame, Rosie! I have a whole closet full of shame...and I think cause I have some 'outside' pressure on me for Samson, I'll probably have to go back to him. Otherwise, I would agree with you whole heartedly! Mike |
