I LOVE the colors in this, Retha!
There is definetly a 'mood' to this piece and the reflections are very well done!!!!

Very vibrant and beautiful.. Nice job of getting your yellows and blues on there without getting too many greens.

Thanks. Love pastels, my problem
is how to store them afterwards without them smudging.
thats why I tend to do them seldom, maybe Ill solve that problem soon.

Thinking..................

Hi Retha!
A thought on storing completed pastel paintings....I usually just frame mine in inexpensive frames, but there is an alternative. If you get some scrap acid-free matt board and glue strips (double thickness)of the same acid-free board (around the perimeter of the painting size) onto the large board you can then lay this flat with another piece of the board over it. Then you can stack them in an out of the way place and as long as you don't stack too many on top of each other, they won't ever touch anything and therefore won't smudge. Obviuosly the bigger they are the more likely the board will sag and touch the piece below it, so you might have to put some type of support board between the larger pieces to keep that from happening. You can find the board on sale at art supply stores. They are usually scratched of discolored so you can get them at good discount prices. Once they are made you have them forever. This works great, but I'm sure that someone out there has another idea or two.....?
Just an idea.

Thanks for the advice
,I used to frame them but cant keep up with the prices.

Your other option seems good might try that but as you say not too much on each other.
otherwise it wont work.

Richard McKinnley has a blog on the Pastel site. One of the entries discusses how he stores and trasnports his pastel paintings. Here is the link:

I thought is was rather interesting and have used the glassine between mine with problem so far but don't have that many stacked either. .. Christine

Retha how do you get the lovely sharp dark lines on the trees? Is the colour black? I see you had a problem with storing them without smudging them, but how do you manage not to smudge them while you are creating them?! As someone new to pastelling, I have found creating clean lines with a nice high contrast as you have done, rather difficult.

Clarity

I use the sharp edge of the pastel and yes it is black and black and dark blue mixed
to give variations in the reflections.
if it doesn't have a sharp edge I break it to get a sharp edge.
