Hi again,
I started painting in May 2007. This was the first forum I ever found regarding art. Someone mentioned WetCanvas and I made my way over there and got hooked and forgot about this forum.
My works in pastel were really lame no matter how much I tried. I just couldn't understand it enough. I came across a fabulous pastel artists, Dianna Ponting, who happens to live in BC. She had a workshop on in October so I signed up. It changed everything.
If you really want to get into pastels and are having trouble, I suggest signing up for a workshop somewhere to teach you more about them. It will make everything so much easier, IMO.
Anyway, here are a few of my paintings.
Note that the candy apple was my first pastel painting after the workshop. It ended up being accepted into a juried show (my first ever to enter), then it won "Best in Show", then it sold!!! I was on cloud nine for a good 2 months!!! Not trying to brag but more emphasize how much one can improve by learning from others instead of trying to learn it all through books and trial and error.
So, here are some more of my work....

Absolutely beautiful work! You are very talented. How do you get such clarity, crispness and beautiful colors? What kind of paper do you use and what kind of pastels? Do you blend? You aren't bragging in what you say above, but you sure deserve to!
Michele
P.S. I checked out your website. Great design and I love your blog - fun to read and informative. Thanks! |

Thanks for your comments, you make me blush.
Clarity and vibrancy for comes from not mixing or blending in too many colours. I put a lot of pastel down in steps and then blend the steps. One that is done it is done. The more I fiddle with it the more muddy and dull it gets.
I use Sennelier La Carte paper, sand colour I believe.
Yes, I blend a LOT. Use my fingers mostly and occasionally a colour shaper for those hard to get to areas. I am getting into blending with the pastel stick more and more though.
Thanks for your comments on my site and blog. I worked hard on that design and glad it comes across well. Did you find it easy to navigate?
Cheers,
Michael |

Hi Michael,
Thanks for answering. Yes, I found your site very easy to navigate. Thanks for your input on how you achieve blending without muddying. I should have realized that the areas that I want to blend are best left to just a few colors as that makes a lot of sense to maintain a pure color. Also, I've yet to learn when to decide what's done and leave it alone. Not to be gross, but do you now belong to the bloody blending fingers guild? I used to get that problem on the sanded paper but I guess I'm working a little differently now as it hasn't happened lately (thank goodness).
Michele
P.S. How did you get your signature to be links? |

Nope, no bloody fingers here. Even after using Wallis. I blend, but not that much.
I get links in the signature by using this line:

| Amazing work!! Just learning pastels...and now i think i understand what i am doing...or NOT doing to get work close to yours. I mix way too much. A big no-no. Anyway, each one gets a little better. just hope i live long enough!!!
Wish we could get a pastel workshop here in central NC. Just went to a Chuck MacLachlan watercolor workshop. Pretty good but not sure it helped my portraits. Oh well!
Great work.

Just posted and forgot to mention...I too, am a WC blogger at times. I "play" in the watercolor, pastel and portrait forums! No wonder I've slacked off...no time to paint!!!

| I remember the wonderful WIP you did on the candy apple at WetCanvas! It is still one of my favorites, just a great job of creating the texture and feel of the candy; it even feels sticky to look at. |
