3/1/08: Hi again, I've updated this painting with your suggestions and also tried to get the colors to show truer to life as the painting is not as dark as my original photo posted below. See the second photo and let me know what you think. Thanks.

| Hmmmm, Michelle, so dark and mysterious, just like those spots are in real life. I kind of think you should give that bird just a tiny hint of an eye. What do you think? Is the bird on a log? If so, would it be that light? Or is that its reflection that I see? I wish I could see this one in real life. I love the way you handled the hanging moss or whatever from the trees. Thanks for posting this. Gene |

Hi Gene,
Thanks for commenting. The bird is in the water and the white under him is his reflection. I think I'll work on him some more to make him fit in with the rest of the scene better (he's so white in my painting and I'm not sure that's the best depiction or that he fits in well).

Michele, how lovely! Your use of the pastels really give texture and feeling to the moss and trees, and even the water. I'm in awe of your talent on this one. I agree that the hint of an eye would be good; maybe you could bring some of the tree roots into the water with a slight reflection, too. You seem to know what to do with the egret, so my hat is off to you. |

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your compliments and suggestions. I added a whisper of an eye, darkened the egret and his reflection and also worked a little more on the tree reflections.
I think I'll bring this one to a juried show next week. I think the picture that I placed here is a little darker than the painting. It's hard to know as everyone's monitor probably sees it differently. I'm looking forward to more suggestions and comments. Thanks everyone.

This painting has a nice mood. Egrets are always interesting to me, I've done 2 paintings of them in the past. I think the scan is probably a little dark, since even the white looks too dark on my monitor. What size is it and what support did you use? I've recently ordered a bunch of different papers to try my pastels on and I am always curious as to what everyone uses. What brand of pastels do you prefer? Good Luck at the Show!! |

Hi Justine,
Thanks for commenting. It's on a 9x12 sheet of white Wallis Sanded paper. I'm not sure what you mean by support - I taped this paper to foam board. I just ordered some Art Spectrum paper which has some grit but not as much as sanded paper and I'm anxious to see how I'll like it. My favorite pastel is Great American even though I don't have a set of them yet. I used NuPastel, Rembrant and Sennelier for this picture.

Thanks for the info Michele. I bought some Wallis, and have tried it on one painting so far. Before that I was using canson mi tientes (probably spelled wrong) and sometimes rough watercolor paper. I was surprised how different the Wallis is. I also bought some pastel board, some colorfix coated and some canson black paper to try. When I get something done I'll post it. I used the word support because I didn't know if it was done on paper or board, that's all. I didn't know what else to call it. Perhaps a better choice for me to use would've been surface? I've been using mostly rembrant pastels, and a variety of pastel pencils I also have a handful of harder pastels I bought when I was taking classes, and found I used them more with the Wallis than I have in the past with the canson. Anyway let us know how your show goes. |

| Hi Michele, I am just starting landscapes really. so i don't know a whole lot..but i think maybe the trees in the distance need to go further back and a little more forward of the foreground..so you have more of a feeling of distance...i could be wrong on this..take what i say on this with a grain of salt..please!! I like the way you have a painterly feel to this..and there is a color cohesion going on that i like!! good job! |

Hi Alicia,
I think you're right. I've been doing landscapes for a couple of years, but I'm still learning and that's why I joined this forum to get other's opinions and learn more. I focused so much on the color of this that I didn't get a good sense of atmosphere or focal point. There's so much to think about... Thanks for your input - and don't be afraid to offer it - anytime!!!
