Pastel on wood paper. Approx. 14"x 18".
Some reflection due to being mounted under glass (too lazy to remove it for pic! )
Just started working in my studio last week. I have several pieces going and I will post them in appropriate topic areas as I complete them...didn't know what I was missing, being down so long !!

Mike, I would have never believed that the paper is separate from the flowers in pastel if you had not mentioned it. Wow. You have definitely made the flowers as real as the paper itself. Nice job with the color and depth.
I also read about your studio...awesome. I'm so happy for you to have a wife that supports you like she does. Do you sometimes pinch yourself to see if this wonderful life of yours is real? |

Very nice work here Mike. I wish we could see more of the detail. I bet the bees look awsome. From what I can see, you've captured them in flight? Jim

| I like it Mike! Looks like you just set flower and leaves on the paper. Have you done anything else on this type of paper before? Great subject to put on it. Jay. |

Mike, I am confussed...... Is that actually wood, did you only paint the morning glories on the wood or on the glass....Did you paint the wood paper or dose it come in that way......What I'm try'n to ask is...What all did you paint? I've never seen paper like that, it looks uneven....I don't get out much. Explain this piece for me. Rosie By the way, great vines...your work is tops. |

Ok, let me explain this... The paper is thinly sliced wood, that has been layered while wet (similar to veneer only loose, layered in different directions and no adhesive) and pressed while drying. i've painted the morning glories directly onto the paper and then adhered it to matboard... The paper is supposed to represent the fence that the glories are climbing on. I tore and peeled the edges of the paper before placing it on the matboard. The bee on the left is painted on the matboard, so it would look as though it was flying into the piece. this paper was purchased on eBay about a year ago. it is very hard to work on because it kinda falls apart easily. No erasing is allowed with this stuff!!!! I hope that helps... Kim; Thank you, and yes when I'm up in my studio looking working and out the window, I do pinch myself. I am very lucky and I greatly appreciate her support and the life that I have... Jim; Thank you. The bees were fun to do. Some are in flight and a couple are on flowers. I had these glories growing at my old place and just love the colors. I plan on doing more pieces with them. And, planting some of these where we live now. Jay; Thank you. I haven't yet used this paper for anything else, but I do plan on it. I was thinking birds? Or, maybe hanging farm items, tools, garden impliments..I dunno, any ideas? Rosie; Thank you. Did I answer your question? It is uneven because of the layers going different ways and also because it has no adhesives holding it together. It's holding up well under glass and having it adhered to the matboard keeps it together also. Other than what I've painted on it (the nails and other stuff, it comes the way you see it). The edges are also more even that what you see here. It's very difficult to draw/paint on, but I like the texture and the look. |

Mike,
The effect of everything is really cool. I do have one question, though. Are you concerned about the acidity level in the wood as a painting surface? Will change the color of the morning glories over time? Did you treat the wood veneer before painting on it?.....Okay, that was more than 1 question. Sorry about that. |

This is awesome, Mike. Very fun to work on such an unusual support! (I'm sure it was a challenge, but what a fun result!) How much of it do you have left? How did you manage to find it? I think all of your ideas for additional paintings are great. I really like the tools idea. I think it could lend itself to something nostalgic also, like an old car or bicycle or something. Or something very woodsy like ferns or mushrooms. I can't wait to see more |

Thank you both! Suzanne; I really didn't concern myself with the acidity of the wood...my bad! If it changes, so be it...my better half wouldn't let me sell it anyway, she claimed it before it was finished. Treating the veneer is probably a good idea, however I'm not sure how well it would take the pastels after it was treated. i guess I'm gonna find out!!! P.S. You have gotten a lot more snow down south!!!Last week had to be pure hell down there.
Justine; I really, really, really like your idea for old car or bicycle! Can I have your permission to use either one of those ideas? I still have a couple three sheets, but where, I don't know??? I haven't seen them since I've moved here...there out there somewhere...I hope! I'm thinking that any veneer would work. This is layered very loosely and criss-cross, so it is just a cool paper to use. I was looking for handmade paper on eBay and there it was. I also got some really nice handmade papers that are really cool from other sellers. Other than Canson, I like working on unusual handmade papers for pastels and pencil work. |

| Mike, I've been unable to check in for a few days. What a delight to come on and find this posting. What an unusual painting. Now, this one is going to get into a few shows, if only for its uniqueness. I really like it! Thanks so much for sharing this. When I first saw it I was filled with questions, but you've answered all of them quite well.. Gene |

Mike, You don't need my permission to use any ideas! I was sharing them with you or whoever else reads the posts If I wanted to keep it to myself, I wouldn't have posted it. Sorry it took me so long to get back here, my day job has been pretty busy. Have fun. |

Thanks, Justine! I don't like to take it for granted on things like this. Ideas belong to the person that has them, and I'd feel like thief if I just took it without asking. Thanks, again! Mike |
