I have started a new Red Lily painting (similar to my Orange Lily). The issue I'm having is that I can't keep the red color red. It seems to turn orange or fade. I want a deep bright red how do I keep the color.

Any suggestions on pastel colors? I started with NuPastels for the base and I'm now using Winsor & Newton soft pastels.

Most of my paintings have an orange base and the pastels work great for this.

Let me know what has worked for you when using red.

Thanks,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

What comes to mind is the color of red pastel being used. If it has any orange in it (such as a cadmium) my guess is that's what's happening. I'd reach for reds that are more on the crimson side for the darks and pink side for the lights. Otherwise, I'm baffled by this. Good luck.

Have you tried using a different brand of pastels? Unison has some great reds, as well as Girualt. Girault happen to be one of my favorite brands. They're very velvetly and have great coverage. They're just above a rembrandt in softmess, yet they're great for detail too. I have found that Rembrandt reds do fade over time. www.dakotapastels.com This Website is  where I get the Girault pastels from. It is a great resource.
