Art - beautiful work.  I love doing portraits as it gives such a human element to a picture.  You feel the person smiling - great work.  Love the third one.

I think the fisherman is my favorite. It leaves my eye wanting to see more of the background behind him. The guy with the flower hat.....what an impish grin he has! I think you did a fantastic job on the colors, lights and shadows of his skin. The 1st pic seems a bit less finished....as in, I see more of the paper showing thru....but those sad eyes really draw you in and I like the print of his shirt. Nice work Charlie!

Hi Charlie,

Your work is beautiful. You capture the personalities well and I love the colors. What I think is lacking is 3-dimensionality or depth, although I'd say you're very close. I really didn't fully understand how to obtain depth so I googled it and found some statements that might be helpful. These are from artists' websites:

"You will be shown the creative use of color and how to obtain depth and dimension through the proper use of light and shadow in addition to exploring the techniques of design and composition."

"The more textural the working surface, the more layers of pastel may be overlaid to create a painting of depth and intensity."

"The pastels can be applied to any type of coarse paper, but I use an archival sanded pastel paper that allows me to put multiple coats of colors and to achieve a marvelous depth in my paintings. "

"This "building up" of layers of media creates an illusionary three dimensional depth on the canvas and a gossamer beauty."

"Transparent, tinted layers (glazes) add subtle effects, such as depth."

I hope this helps. Looking this up really helped me to understand how to obtain depth.

Hi Charlie,

Yes, congratulations on selling them. That tells you right there that your work is very good. I'm sorry if my critique might have come across as rough. I guess I pushed the issue because your faces are so good. I want to see everything else match them.

Art-These are all very nice. I especially like the last one. It has a more impressionistic feel to me. It also feels looser than the others. Great Job. Mike
